Question about Columbia Sociology
MarxianSociologist replied to Darth.Vegan's topic in Sociology Forum
Are you applying for Fall 2013? That deadline definitely hasn't passed yet. The application won't be available until Fall 2012. They just made admissions offers for Fall 2012. But if you're applying for Fall 2012, then yes, the deadline has definitely passed; it was in December. -
Question about Columbia Sociology
MarxianSociologist replied to Darth.Vegan's topic in Sociology Forum
Yes, grad students at Columbia can work with faculty at Barnard. I asked the grad director because I really want to work with Elizabeth Bernstein at Barnard. -
I just declined at the end of last week. sociology27 - I'll PM you.

"collegial vs. competitive" top programs
MarxianSociologist replied to socscholar's topic in Sociology Forum
I've got it on good authority (a fairly recent Chicago alum) that Chicago is not a happy place to be for grad students. However, if you want to be in Chicago, I just visited Northwestern, and it seems super collegial. They are very egalitarian with their funding, and the grad students seem to get along very well. -
The funding isn't that great considering the cost of living in LA. I think the stipend was between $17 and $18K, and if I ended up getting a fellowship from the grad school it would go up to somewhere around $21K. In any event, I declined my offer there, so I hope it helps you out!

Is anyone else completely geeking out about the NYU visit day itinerary, particularly the tour of Greenwich village by Harvey Molotch? He's like half the reason I applied to NYU. So excited!
-
largo - I received an email today saying I was wait listed.
-
I just got an email saying I'm wait listed. Same as others are saying---they got over 410 applicants and only accepted 8. I assume they will pull people from the wait list as some of those 8 decline their offers as opposed to aiming for a cohort of 3-4.

I was actually in the same situation, as far as wanting to get into Northwestern for personal reasons (aside from it being a great program). My boyfriend has already been accepted into the English program there, and we were really nervous that we were gonna get split up because we didn't have any overlapping acceptances yet. So yay for NU!!!
-
I personally think the sociology faculty at NYU is stellar. Many of the people I'd be interested in working with, like Harvey Molotch for example, have quite the Marxist slant to some of their work. His famous "growth machine" theory is one example of that. Anyway, I don't wanna get us too off topic here, but feel free to PM me if you want to talk some more cuz I definitely love me some Marx!

I'm one of the acceptances. I wouldn't give up until you get a firm rejection though. You never know how things will work out with these different waves of admissions and such.
-
Wow...Columbia and NYU, flowerblitz?! That's amazing! At least those of us who applied to both and haven't heard anything know there's going to be an opening at at least one of them when you decline haha.
-
Saw an NYU acceptance posted. Does anyone care to claim it?
-
Does anyone care to claim any of the acceptances and share their stats? Columbia is very high on my list, so I'm pretty bummed that I haven't heard. Would love to hear what the DGS had to say on the call--are all the acceptances out, etc?
-
I just received my acceptance email, so I wouldn't start worrying just yet. As others have said, it seems that the DGS is personalizing each email.

Acceptances/Rejections/Decisions
MarxianSociologist replied to sociology27's topic in Sociology Forum
I have a BS in Finance and an MA in Sociology from the University of Kansas. 3.99 undergrad GPA and 4.0 MA GPA. 650 Verbal and 780 quant GRE. No pubs, but had one under review when I submitted applications (which has since been rejected). Letters were from 3 pretty respected scholars in the areas of gender, sexuality, and theory/globalization--which are also my interests in addition to urban sociology. I also worked for a year in the finance industry during its spectacular collapse in 2008, which provided me with the moral and personal indignation to change fields and pursue something that actually benefits society. -
I applied to CUNY, as well. When I saw rejections being posted, I looked at my application status, and it says I'm accepted. But I haven't gotten an email or anything from them yet, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Dr. Nagel is my current advisor, and she's amazing. Antonio was also one of my letter writers--also an awesome person. And I currently work as Kim's TA--once again, a great guy to work with. Feel free to PM me for more info.

I got accepted to UCLA today too! Congrats to the other admits! And SocHope, it was an email from Ching Kwan Lee, who is the chair of admissions. -
To those accepted at UCSB -- Is anyone planning on going to the visit? I'm debating since I'd have to fly from Kansas City, and UCSB isn't covering much of the expense.
-
I didn't post in the results survey, but I was accepted into UCSB with funding. I got a call last Monday, January 23rd. But I wouldn't lose hope just yet if you haven't heard since it seems people are still getting phone calls this week.
