Reading through the thread, I am so amused that so many of us are wait listed at UMass I'm not in the English department, but I was an undergrad in English (and I'm a member of the Alumni advisory board for the undergrad program)---- it is really a great place, with a lot of new life and interesting new directions because of a bunch of young faculty and passionate long term faculty. Best of luck on your status.

Thanks for this post, OP!! I am waitlisted at my first choice for PhD and I am really hoping that it will work out in a positive way. One of my current professors got her PhD at Yale, and when I told her that I was waitlisted she said, "That's excellent." which threw me off quite a bit, because it feels like such a failure to me, but when she explained that they are only waitlisting people who they want to work with and that getting waitlisted at this level actually is an accomplishment that I should be proud about, it made me feel much better. Three more weeks+ of limbo is nervewracking---but hopefully we will all have good results from it!
Good luck, everyone!!

I'm hoping to go there for my MA, waiting on funding decisions. What is your concentration?
Thanks! I'm American History/Public History. I would imagine that their waitlist does move a bit (because many people getting in there are also getting accepted to upper tier schools) but I guess there isn't any way to know. Sigh, Amherst is my 2nd home (I did my undergrad in a different dept at UMass), so I am really really hoping that I get lucky and off of the waitlist.

Lurker who was waitlisted for UMass Amherst's Ph.D. program today That smiley is a bit happier than I actually feel, but a waitlist is a good thing. It's my first choice, so hopefully things will line up and I'll get an offer...eventually

18 people accepted to UMass MA/PhD program. . . About 3 of them have posted their "Accepted" results on this site. . . One of them sounds like they're going from the forums.
To the other 17 people. . . please don't go. UMass is a great place, but I want to go. The coming weeks on the wait list are going to slowly drive me insane.
Hi, could I ask where you got the # of admitted? I'm curious because I spoke to the History office this morning and my application status still hasn't been decided, but the secretary didn't mention that they were finished with the cycle. 18 is probably a full house though, so if that number is spot on they probably should be finished with admissions.
I'm *hoping* that if I got rejected the secretary would tell me over the phone, it truly sounded like a decision hadn't been made yet. Ugh.

Did you fill out a FAFSA for your MA? Did you get any grant money? I am planning on doing it but I have been told not to expect much.
Other than loans that is.
I did, my MA program is a very small program run by a museum, so funding was kind of unheard of. I worked fulltime atthe start of my MA and got a few grand a semester from my employer towards tuition for two semesters, I paid the rest myself. after my second semester I paid tuition with loans.
-
I made a big decision and took loans for my MA to fill gaps in my part time earnings, not recommended, I think, but it worked for me. For PH.D. I am only going if I get a funded slot, but I also filled out a fafsa to give myself a cushion if needed. It is such an individual decision.

I am guessing once you go the PhD route however, this would almost be impossible?
I would have to agree with this, although how on earth would anyone be able to pay rent and eat on just their stipend? Sigh.

I'm actually not upset at all. UMass is my top choice. I love the school, and my GPA from back in 2002 was terrible. I returned in 2009 and finished up with a kick ass gpa, but my overall was still crap.
I am going to UMass for MA, and I'm hoping to kick ass, take names, and then get into a great Ph.D program in a couple of years. Apparently the official notice of Accepted/Waitlisted/Rejected is getting mailed out next week, I just happen to have a few close friends (I went there as an Undergrad) who were able to get me some insider info.
This is neat to hear...nervewracking, but neat. It will be good to know something (either way) soon. Best of luck on the waitlist! I applied to the Ph.D. program so at least I will hear something soon! Someone got in on 2/22 to the Ph.D. program with full funding (according to the survey) but I wonder if they were also notified by a POI informally?
Waiting is absolutely the worst.

I started my MA program working full time and changed things at the end of my first semester so I could work part time---my problem was that my program was very small (through a museum) and that meant that many classes I needed were offered during the day. A lot of the archives I needed (and the Library of Congress) had day hours as well, and I just couldn't squeeze everything I needed to do into Saturday or take time off whenever I needed to visit a museum library or archive.
On the other hand, a close friend is in her 3rd year of law school and she works full time at a busy DC law firm. She's full time in her law program and managing things just fine, so I think it depends on everything else on your plate.

I probably wouldn't email her back with the correction. It is very possible that she mistyped 3 instead of 5 and that the directive from the department had the correct number. The graduate studies director won't go back to the department with the new info.

Ok, so I just got offered an MA at UMass........ I doubt I'll take it if there isn't any funding and I get a funded offer elsewhere, but it's nice to know that I will have that option if I go down in flames everywhere else. Still, no concrete offer for a fully funded phd has materialized. Sigh........
Congratulations on the MA offer from UMass Crazedandinfused (is it possible to morph it into a Ph.D. later down the line?) I'm still waiting to hear, could I ask if you found out via email from the department or by phone?

I'm confused about why I see so many art history applicants on the results board...History (regular) is required curriculum in every A.A. and B.A. program, so at least there is an 'artificial' demand for a steady supply of history professors, but what kind of demand is there for teachers (or practitioners) of art history?
any insights...?
My MA is in Art History/Museum studies and I'm working towards becoming a curator...and I'm hoping to get my Ph.D. in History. Art Historians work in museums, auction houses, galleries, design firms, publishing firms, historical houses along with traditional teaching options.

The Umass admit isn't me, but I am glad to see some movement on the results survey fome them... frightened that I am not getting in...it is my first choice, but I guess we'll see. And maybe even this week!

Hi there, it doesn't look like anyone here applied to BU for the fall? But I thought I'd ask. I believe that they notify via snail mail? It has only been a month or so since the application deadline, and they don't appear to notify until March (thanks, results search!) but of course I am terrible with the waiting game.
-
Hi Everyone! I've been lurking for a while, and the waiting is driving me absolutely bonkers, so I figured I would introduce myself. I've applied to History and American Studies Ph.D. programs...so far it looks like only one poster here has applied to UMass for History also.

For PhD, yes they only have funded slots (I believe) so that's a good thing, although it probably also makes it attractive to the folks who are already accepted My hope is that some of them are city people, and they will see sleepy Amherst and the pioneer valley and realize that they can't possibly live there
