Congrats on your admittance! I graduated with a masters degree in materials science from A&M and had to work a lot with ChemE. It is a pretty good department and the administration are also good. Sometimes a bad review could be from someone with genuine problems or just a personal gripe. Also, experiences across departments/colleges can be quite different. You said you are a fan of small towns so you will definitely like A&M. I had a positive experience in engineering and at the University. There is also a large international population and my lab had a good mix of people. I would suggest you connect with people in your lab/department once you get there and go to the events that are hosted by the graduate association to diversify your experiences. Hope this helps.

I recieved a 'under active review' email yesterday. The email said that they have gone through 3 rounds of awards and although I haven't been offered I am still under active review. Final notifications will be made by March 15.

Carlos, Were you interviewed by anyone at their member company? My status has changed but I haven't been interviewed. I am not sure if it is possible to get an award without interviewing with one of the companies.

There is not much information out there on what the status means. Mine went from 'released' to 'held' in the same day.

I am applying for the GEM fellowship and my Employer Status is now 'HELD'. Does anyone know what this means? I know the email from the GEM office mentioned 'unmatched', 'matched', 'released'. My status went through all those stages, then went to 'held'. Any other GEM applicants out there? Would love to know your experience.
