  1. I want to go straight for the PhD, but I worry that with just a BA it might be a long shot to get accepted to any of these programs.

After applying for Fall 2012 with just a BA, I learned that some schools actually prefer applicants who don't have an MA first. I know this is true of Penn State, which usually accepts around 3 funded "MA students" who are really expected to stay through the PhD, then only one maaaybe two PhD students who already have MAs. UT Austin accepts and funds students directly to the PhD program both with and without MAs, but I have less of an idea whether they actually prefer BA-only applicants. From what I understand this may actually be a growing trend, but I'm not sure what other programs have this mentality. But don't rule out PhD programs just because you assume you can't compete--do some digging first!

  2. Congrats to everyone on their final decisions!

I admit, I've been lurking (and trying not to lurk) throughout this decision process. But, I just committed to Purdue for PhD in Rhet/Comp after a long and agonizing decision/visiting/pondering process.

    :)

Awesome! My process was agonizing too, but I look forward to meeting you this fall!

  3. Thanks everyone, this is all really good advice.

I think my biggest concern is that UW's program is huge--I'm worried that support for the students will be a little stilted.

That's one of my major concerns for my own decision right now as well. I was advised to ask POIs how many dissertation committees they're currently serving on to get a sense of how much individual attention to really expect. And definitely ask some current students about their experiences with mentoring and the size of the program, as well as how they've fared financially on the stipend and extra opportunities for funding. And personally I'd see if I could set up phone calls with grad students rather than emailing. It seems like it might be easier to get some straight less-than-glowing opinions via an actual conversation.

  4. I'm in literature but also likely staying through the Ph.D. Really excited about the course offerings for the Fall. Do you know when orientation is yet?

I'm excited too! I just hope I can still get into the classes I want this late. No idea about orientation. I know TA training lasts about a week, so I'd imagine orientation is about two weeks before the semester starts? (Ahem...any of you lurking Penn Staters out there care to show yourselves and share? Yes, you, Leland and Emily...)

Cross off Arizona State, they stopped funding MAs several years back (though the website still says you can apply for a TAship, MA applicants never actually get them). Also the TA stipend someone gave for Penn State on the last page is high, I think the standard is now $16,000, not $20,000 (unless I'm just getting the short end of the stick..).

  6. A few hours ago I got a sort of, almost acceptance email? I guess they're just waiting for funding to become available for me, which is "very likely," eek! Can anyone (and by anyone I mean primarily ComeBackZinc, haha--or anyone accepted!) tell me what the "Purdue Reunion Party" is? The email says he hopes to see me Wednesday, and his grad student assistant will be following up with info, but um, if I'm hopping on a plane tomorrow, it'd be good to know that now! And I don't want to email back like a frantic crazy person.

  7. There was an MA-acceptance-by-phone post on the results board yesterday, I think.

I wonder if this person also had previously received a quasi-waitlist email?

What I mean is, if I didn't get ANY email, does that mean it's safe for me to assume I'm definitely out? I just want to know! Didn't get any reply to an inquiry email either.

I should just presume rejection and move on right?

The acceptance by phone on Tuesday was me. I thought I was in the same position as those who got the quasi-waitlist email, but my email was a response specifically to my inquiry, so I could have just as easily been in some other amorphous category. Who knows. Unfortunately I don't think anything is "safe" to assume about this process!

  8. Just FYI, the Penn State visit weekend is March 30, if that helps those on the pseudo-waitlist gauge a timeline of when they might hear at all. Although I'm currently questioning whether those pseudo-waitlist emails really meant waitlist. I thought I had been waitlisted (though my email was different--I had specifically asked my status because of an early decision deadline elsewhere, and got a reply that seemed similar to others'), but my phone call with the DGS didn't really confirm that--it seemed like there might have been some other funding hold up. So I'm wondering if that's the case for others who got ambiguous "We want you, but" emails as well.

  9. Just got an email from Penn State to set up a phone call, so now I'm sitting at work too anxious to do anything productive. And now I just saw a rhet/comp person turned down a Purdue offer, so they may be in motion now too. I'd been doing so well keeping my frantic hoping at bay for the last week, but now that's out the window and I'm totally freaking out again. Make it end!

  10. It's great to hear that you are so happy at Purdue! Could you share what in the department and the teaching makes you so enthusiastic about the program? My friend is a first year in the rhet/comp (Gracemarie), but I'd love another perspective. Thanks!

I'd love more info too! I don't have an acceptance yet, but with the positive email from Thomas Rickert, I'm trying to start considering possibilities now. You've already completely sold me on the wonderful community environment (though I could certainly stand to hear you gush about it more...), but I'm also curious about support within the department in terms of fellowships, conference funding, other seemingly small things that can go a long way? And it seems like TAships vary, but is there kind of a standard load? Has anything been less than stellar about the program?

Thanks so much; you've been super helpful and supportive of us anxious applicants.

  11. I just got an email from Thomas Rickert (after I emailed the grad coordinator about my March 1 deadline) saying that all first round offers were out, but I'm on their small, unofficial waitlist. I applied to the MA in rhet/comp, if that makes any difference.

Edit: But I don't think they normally notify people that they're on the waitlist, so not hearing anything doesn't mean you're out. I just was trying to work around my crazy deadline, and I'm really grateful to have gotten more info from Penn State and Purdue to help. Unfortunately that info is that I'm unofficially waitlisted for both, and I'm going to have to keep trying to prevent ASU from taking my funding away while I wait... but still.

  12. I don't think it could hurt you, but what do I know?

If the stipend is directly tied to teaching (a standardized pay grade, I think), do they have the power to extend additional monies?

I also might have read somewhere that these extra resources go to pay for the semester-long dissertation fellowships and funded summers.

I spoke to a grad program coordinator about this--apparently there's a recruitment fund specifically for these situations. They may be able to give small fellowships (sometimes just for the first year) on top of the standard stipend. That's just one school, but I would guess there are others with similar funds.

  13. I applied to rhet/comp, and got my rejection a bit ago. I think I'm kind of relieved, actually (okay, and bummed). I think I applied more because I want to move to Austin than I did for love of their program. It would have been really hard to walk away from the chance to live there, even though ASU's program is really probably a better fit.

  14. Yes my letter said to respond by March 1 also. BUT, the director of a different school I was accepted to told me that schools aren't allowed to make you decide before April 15, so not to let other schools pressure you to choose sooner. Not sure how that would work practically speaking, though.

I think ComeBackZinc has been saying that the April 15 standard decision deadline is part of the Council of Graduate Schools Resolution, which many schools sign their allegiance to, but essentially it's not a binding document and schools can pretty much do whatever they want. I talked to the both the director of the rhet/comp program and the DGS today, and they've agreed to give me an extension to decide. They said the TA offer stands until April 15, but after mid-March, they can't guarantee that my fellowship will still be available.

So I guess if you're really considering the program, maybe it'd be a good idea to contact the DGS so it doesn't seem like you've just blown off their deadline?

  15. ASU has a great program, and I don't mean to tell them their business, but March 1st seems really early to ask for a decision.

Yeah, I have a meeting with the director of the PhD program in an hour to see if I can get an extension. I'm already here and known in the department, soooo I hope I have some bargaining power. I feel totally trapped trying to decide by Thursday without any official decisions from my other schools.
