SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants

You should be able to send the school you accepted to an e-mail (possibly a phone call and thank you note as well) explaining the situation. It should be fine -- they run across this all the time. -

In-state tuition is really nice. I'm deciding between Illinois, IU, and Northwestern currently. Illinois is my top choice cause I really like the program and it's in-state for me. I'm also on the waitlist for funding at IU so it's a long shot that I'd go there. Let me know if you have any questions about Indiana U. I can tell you a lot about the town and such. =) -

Congrats, kweaver! Did you get any aid from them? I'm not sure where I'm going yet -- possibly! -

Does anyone know if Governors State University gives assistant-ships? -

Here's a question: What do you do if you are accepted to multiple schools and on the wait-list for funding at them? Can you "accept" to both schools and then see if you get funding? I'm just confused as to what to do if they don't tell you until after April 15th if you got an assistant-ship, but you're supposed to let schools know by then. Any thoughts? -

I PMed you about the open house. Yeahh, I laughed when I opened the rejection letter. It came as the same day I heard from Northwestern. My theory is I was either overqualified or didn't have enough prerequisites for their program since it's smaller (I'm a non-major). -

Has anyone heard anything about funding from Northwestern? -

The STEPS program at IU is great, plus bilingualism is a really needed part of the field. I really don't think you can make a wrong decision education-wise with the schools you applied to. Are you going to go to IU's open house? -

Congrats on all your acceptances as well! Money is probably going to play a main role. I am more interested in clinical work than research (though I'm not ruling it out) so I firmly believe that I will be able to get a good job no matter where I get my education. I am in-state in Illinois, so U of I is high on my list. I visited the other day and was extremely impressed -- I loved it. Then again, if another smaller school offers me a free ride, I may take it. U of I is not cheap and I really don't want to be in massive debt. How are you going to make your decision? I'm assuming you're from Illinois based on your school choices? Thanks! Maybe? I'm not quite sure what the deal is -- that's why I thought I'd ask everyone else. If everyone else who got accepted also got an invitation, I'm assuming it's some sort of error. Probably not. I'm going to go visit, but it's just so expensive that I don't think it's feasible or worth it. -

Got accepted at Northwestern. Really surprised as I didn't get invited to their open house. Did this happen to anyone else? -

For those of you talking/interested in how to fund grad school - if you were accepted into a school where it would be $40,000 total to a great, well ranked school or a free ride to a lesser known, smaller program in the middle of nowhere... which would you choose? -

Yeah, and they had an extra leap day this year too! Booo. We should all just breathe and do some yoga. And wine doesn't hurt. : ) -

I unfortunately can't make it that day so I'm going there this week to tour and talk to an adviser. -

I e-mailed her on Thursday and she said it was mailed. I'm hoping that my letter is late cause they're putting together an assistantship. But that's just me dreaming. ; ) I don't know of anyone who's heard about funding yet. -

Hopefully we find out soon! (Though I'm glad I'm not the only one.) I have no idea what the delay could be, except that they may have sent them out in waves. -

Congrats! I was accepted at Illinois also, but I am a non-major so would I start in the fall (I think). I am currently talking to them because I've taken most if not all of their prerequisites. -

I was talking about Wisconsin Madison, not Marquette. -

They have definitely sent rejections, wait list, and acceptances. I was wait listed. I know people who were accepted. (And somebody on the stats board posted that they were rejected and the letter included a list of prerequisites that they were missing.) They seem to be sending them randomly, so I have no idea what that means. I heard around February 9th or 10th. -

Thanks for the Iowa info! Only one school has mailed me anything, but it's been to my temporary address. That's very weird that they'd send it to your parents. Hopefully that doesn't keep happening! -

I heard from them a while ago, early-mid February. I wouldn't worry if you've applied there though as it seems kind of random how they're sending letters out. People are still hearing positive and negative news from them. -

Trina, I spoke to the head of the SLP department at Governors over the phone and detailed which pre-reqs I had taken. I will have about 25-30 hours of speech and hearing science credits when I graduate this spring. I do not have all of them, so I am curious (for all of my schools, actually) if what they told me is actually accurate. I spoke with every school that had a list of pre-reqs or stipulations and all of them on my list told me to definitely apply. I'm hoping that they are serious and do not just want my application fee. I'll let you know. -

Yes, congrats to everyone who heard and was accepted! I just got my first letter from Wisconsin Madison the mail saying I was rejected/waitlisted. I'm feeling very obsessive and anxious right now. :/ Better luck to everyone else.
