  1. Longtime lurker, first time poster.

Would anyone care to claim that shiny new acceptance from UGA? The applicant indicated that he/she received an email, but I was under the impression that the GS would be sending correspondence via snail mail. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

That's me. I broke down and wrote the DGS, and after a day or two, he responded back with notification of my acceptance and a pdf of my letter. It seems like they are mailing letters out now, though. Not sure if that's where I'm going to go, but it's a terrific option in a stellar program for southern history....I didn't know making the decision was going to be so difficult! Good luck, I hope you hear good news too!

  2. I know money is tight and they're trying to not reject or waitlist until they have to, but it might be nice to send out an email or something saying,

"Hey, we did receive your application, you're a strong enough candidate to the point that we don't want to reject you out of hand. To be honest, there are a lot of people ahead of you so we probably won't be accepting you, but we expect to be able to give you more definitive information by X DATE X."

I feel like that would just be the considerate thing to do.

Yes I agree. Have you contacted the DGS or anyone else at UNC about your app? If not, their DGS has been very helpful to me in the past.

  3. It just occurred to me, I have not yet given my weekly call of: "Oh UNC oh UNC, whither dost thou be? Will you not reveal yourself? Send thy decision unto me!"

Same for me with UGA. I was waitlisted at UNC, but knowing that so many others have yet to hear any word from there makes me nervous!

  4. Hi all. I'm considering a move to Columbia in the fall to attend the University of South Carolina. I consider myself to be very left-wing, so if I move to Columbia, will I be all alone? I know that South Carolina has a certain reputation, but is there more than meets the eye, at least in Columbia? I value diversity so I'm not looking to go to a place with only one type of political stance. I just want to make sure there is at least some parity in the only state capital that continues to fly a Confederate flag!

  5. Hey guys. Got some insider information on UNC. It's pretty reliable. They've made their choices. Money was tight. 6 places. So unless they are keeping an unofficial waitlist or are going to make MA offers, I'm counting them out. Not that I was ever really counting them in.

That is small. I received word two weeks ago from the DGS at UNC that I was near the top of their waitlist. With only a few spots though, I'm feeling less than confident that there will be a lot of movement. Here's to hoping!

  6. Hello University of Florida admits...I'm in too, but waitlisted for funding. The DGS said that funding could become available soon, but no guarantees. Are those admitted highly considering UF, on the fence, etc.? Congrats to everyone else!

  7. Hi everyone...anyone else here apply to UNC-CH? I'm waitlisted...bleh. It's my top choice, so I hope I get in! Curious to know if anyone else has been waitlisted, accepted, rejected, etc. or received any other news.

Thanks, and good luck to all!

  8. Thanks everyone! I'm also waiting to hear back from the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, and the University of Delaware.

Are any of ya'll applying to these schools as well, along with UNC, South Carolina, and/or Temple?

  9. Hi all. First time poster here. I was also accepted to Temple for the PhD in American History. I wrote the DGS about funding, and he said they're still trying to figure that out with the College of Liberal Arts. He did indicate that I had reason to be optimistic that I would receive something, however.

I was also accepted to the University of South Carolina with five full years of funding/assistantship. Great program if you want to study the U.S. South. Very stoked about that!

I was also waitlisted at UNC-Chapel Hill. UNC is my first choice, so I hope I can eventually move up!
