I'm from an aerospace background. We even have faculty on our deparment that are from fields as broad as an applied physics background, mechanical engineering, physics and math double major, etc.
Hi spacecase, have you decided on admissions yet ??
-
I'm more of a autonomous systems and controls person so I dont know much about fluids at either school to be honest. I think Dr. Martin and Dr. Jones are the only profs at UMD that come to mind. Also, did the GaTech offer say something about health insurance? It didnt mention anything but I'm not sure if thats implied or how that whole thing works in RA awards.
Well We have to pay for health insurance. Its approx $900 for entire year. (Fall, Spring and Summer). Check this document:
http://www.bursar.gatech.edu/student/tuition/Fall_2011/Fall11-all_fees.pdf
They have mentioned tution fees (for GRA and GTA) and on the second page about mandatory student fees and health insurance.
-
And also one more thing ...
According to you, which university is good for fluid dynamics Georgia or Maryland ??
-
Nice Dude !!! Congrats !!! Did you get financial aid from UMich ?? how much stipend georgia tech provided you ??
-
"will be an RA in his lab"? That sounds pretty finalized there. Have you decided officially to go there?
On another note. Its not April and I still havent heard from UMich. I called and they told me that I can expect to hear back within the next couple of weeks. WEEKS?. oh god. I have no idea what to do...
Yeah I have decided to attend GT. This seems to be the only best choice for me. UMich does not provide any financial aid to MSE students. Waiting for UMD though.
Applied: MIT Aero-astro, Caltech, GaTech, UMD, UMich, UIUC, IIT, UT-Austin, MIT CDO
Rejected: MIT aero-astro, Caltech, UT-Austin
Accepted: GaTech, UMich, UIUC(Non-thesis), IIT
Waitlisted: MIT CDO
Waiting: UMD
-
Yeah they assigned Prof Ruffin as my adviser. However, prof Suresh Menon called me today and I will be RA in his lab (CCL).
-
Hm really? Ive heard differently from the one other person I know that applied to UMich. That'll be such a relief though.
Dont worry! The one thing I realized about GaTech is that theyre really really disorganized. Try emailing Jagoda about your application status and everything too! I met him at the open house and he seems super helpful! It took about 3 weeks after emailing a prof at gatech to get the unofficial word from them so it just takes time.
Got admission in GT via email today morning!! Thanks spacecase618
-
wait, what do you mean the latest will be out by april 15th? Isnt that when they require those admitted to confirm? Does that mean that those that havent heard back yet are rejected?
Also, whats the ASO?
No it seems that 15th April is not a concrete deadline. In the admission letter from UMICH they mentioned that its not required to confirm my admission before 15th April. So dont panic yet bro.
-
I also got an email from prof suresh Menon at computational combustion lab that my background is interesting. But he had few questions. I replied to his questions but he didn't reply back.
I am still waiting for his email. So I am in panic mode for Georgia tech.
-
Hey dont panic bro. It will be alright.
Btw which lab at Georgia tech did you get in ?
-
I figure this would be a good place to ask. Did anyone else apply to UMich for their Aero program and still havent heard back yet? I know that they sent out some acceptances but wasnt sure what to make of my status and I'm going into panic mode about it :/
Hey Just now i got acceptance letter from UMich MSE program. I didnt apply for PhD. No mention of financial aid though.
-
I got wait listed for MIT CDO program. The only best part of it is that they will inform about the acceptances before 30th April. So let's see how it turns out. When I called the department they said only 6-7 have been wait listed. But I don't know how wait list thing works.
Does anyone knows how wait list applicants get accepted At MIT ??
-
Hey yeah i applied to UMich and am still waiting for their response. I also applied to GaTech and UMD. No response from them either.
BTW did you apply for master's program or PHD ? I applied for master's program and that's why i think they are delaying decisions. And also did you get waitlisted in MIT aerospace ?
-
I am also trying to contact professors. None is replying.
BTW i got MS non-thesis admit since i only applied for Master's degree in Aerospace.
-
MIT2013 do you mind sharing your profile here ??
-
Yeah even i emailed Dr. Baeder. I am waiting for a response. I think he archived it. lol. He did read my email.(I sent read notification lol ) Anyways, I am clueless about the anticipated decision dates. Its already mid march and i think i have to inform other universities by mid-april. I hope to get UMD's decision soon.
-
Thanks aero9 for information.
BTW i got waitlist in MIT CDO program. Lets hope for the best.
-
Hey aero9, how would you rate University of Maryland for graduate studies in aerospace. Especially, how good is Fluid dynamics section of the department ?
Actually i have applied there and i think i might get in.
-
Thanks.
btw aero9, which undergrad institution did you attend?
-
congrats aero9.
Wish you good luck for your career.
-
Nice dude. This offer is damn good. So are you taking the offer ?
FYI usnews has ranked Georgia Tech in the 4th position for aerospace grad school category. So you have pretty good future options.
-
Yeah that makes sense. I forgot that they have that rolling applications process. Good Luck!
Hey did you get funding at Georgia Tech ? Do you think whether or not they have RA or TA positions that are still open ? Also which lab did you applied for ?
I appreciate your responses.
-
I probably sent in the application the first week of dec and got accepted first week of feb.
Hey I called them and asked about my application. They said that they are taking rolling applications and my application is also being considered for funding.
They said i will hear soon from them. So i will wait. Also on the result section, i can see many acceptances coming from Georgia in April. So my hope is alive.

I received two rejections within 15 minutes. Oh well !!! Its MIT and Caltech. Two big guns.
Hey folks,
dont get upset on your rejection.
here's what i think:
Its preferred to be at the top in some good college(college you get in) than to perform average at the best one (MIT, Caltech).
MIT Aero-Astro fall 2012 admit !!

Yup GaTech CCL.
All the best for your future.
