  1. I got into the program at CalArts a few years ago and decided to go to a UC school instead partly because of funding. I asked CalArts if they could match my other offers and they said the most they could do was $10k. They're both great schools, though. CalArts has a bigger name but Oregon also has very interesting people (like Jeff Stolet).

Feel free to message me if you have questions. It's always nice to get to know other people in such a small field :)

  2. The way most programs work in the US/UK is that you submit an application in fall/winter (December-January), hear back about admissions decisions in the spring (February-April), and start the program the following fall (September or October). I know it's a bit different from the application cycle in other countries, so hopefully that helps.

As for your chances of getting into those specific programs, I have no idea. I do know that USP is well regarded among academic institutions here in the US so you have at least that going for you!

    Good luck!

  3. I don't see the harm in contacting your POI. It shows interest and reminds them of your existence. I wouldn't be pushy but maybe just reiterate that you are still very interested in the program and would gladly make yourself available for an interview.

  4. Found this on another forum. Really hope someone sends this out and then gets accepted.

    Dear Admissions Committee:

Having reviewed the many rejection letters I have received in the last few weeks, it is with great regret that I must inform you I am unable to accept your rejection at this time. This year, after applying to a great many colleges and universities, I received an especially fine crop of rejection letters. Unfortunately, the number of rejections that I can accept is limited.

Each of my rejections was reviewed carefully and on an individual basis. Many factors were taken into account - the size of the institution, student-faculty ratio, location, reputation, costs and social atmosphere. I am certain that most colleges I applied to are more than qualified to reject me. I am also sure that some mistakes were made in turning away some of these rejections. I can only hope they were few in number.

I am aware of the keen disappointment my decision may bring. Throughout my deliberations, I have kept in mind the time and effort it may have taken for you to reach your decision to reject me. Keep in mind that at times it was necessary for me to reject even those letters of rejection that would normally have met my traditionally high standards. I appreciate your having enough interest in me to reject my application. Let me take the opportunity to wish you well in what I am sure will be a successful academic year.

    SEE YOU IN THE FALL!

    Sincerely,

    XXXXXX

  5. Haha def not a painter - new genres, video, performance - all of which I know UCSD has an amazing record with, but I love the heavy critical aspect of the program at UCI (not that that's not at UCSD), amongst other things, & it's closer to LA, where I currently reside. My partner and cats would stay here so while we've discussed how it's going to work if I go to UCSD, UCI is still a program I'm super interested in.

Hey womp_womp, looks like I'm your homonym divide by two lol. Coincidentally I am also thinking about UCI. I'm going to visit next week to meet with the department, but from that I can tell they are really investing a lot into their arts programs. Looks to me like a real up and coming program. Have you visited?

  6. I did call calarts. They said the financial aid depends on students' need, ranging from 1000 - 10,000.

So what you're saying is that considering both need-based and merit-based financial aid the most I could get would be $10,000? Or in other words I would still have to shell out $28k a year?

  7. Not sure if this is of any help, but I called up the financial aid office the other day and asked them about funding. They told me that they will be sending out offers of financial support at the end of the month and that they offer both need-based and merit-based funding. Not quite sure what to expect - do they ever offer full rides or tuition waivers? Bah, I wish they would just tell us already..

  8. me, haven't got anything yet.

So I actually called them last week and was told that all decisions have been made. Apparently the letters are just being held by the graduate school until the relevant deans are able to provide final approval. The lady at the grad school also told me to expect a notification either today or tomorrow...

Do you have any alternate plans if MEME doesn't work out? I haven't really found any other doctoral programs that fit the bill. The closest thing is probably some of the MFA programs out on the west coast.

  9. Just got accepted to the MFA program in music composition but didn't receive any offer of financial support. I contacted the department and they told me that there is one TA position available but that otherwise I would have to wait on the financial aid office to contact me at the beginning of April.
