  1. Thanks, mattstre, that's good to hear. I'll have to call them next week to see what's taking so long.
I'm going to Morocco and haven't received my final forms, either. They've only mailed them, from Morocco, last week. So, OD09, I wouldn't worry...I think it's that way across the board.

Just to let you guys know, I think they tend to send stuff really late. I just received my final forms (ones to sign and confirm that you accept the grant) a few weeks ago. I never received anything confirming my medical clearance either (but i'm sure i'm cleared since they sent me everything else). Today, I received a packet with a handbook/other documents finalizing everything. If you want to, you should call your program manager's office! They are always willing to answer questions and help out in anyway they can.

  2. I don't know how many alternates are still out there, but I just wanted to let y'all know that they are still awarding grants. I was moved from alternate status to principal status a few weeks ago, and i'm really excited!!! Funding became available, and I guess since it's late spring they are finding extra money to send people! I know how frustrating/trying it was to be an alternate, but hang in there. Good luck to other alternates!

  3. Thanks top5678!!

They contacted me via phone and e-mail. I am corresponding with the Mexico Commission now through e-mail.

awesome!!! congrats again!!! did iie contact you first, or the comission? hopefully i'll hear something soon also!

  4. Alternates, don't give up hope yet!!! I was just notified that there is another opening for an ETA in Mexico. I can't believe it! Hang in there!!! Each and every one of you still have a chance. Best of luck to all!

congrats!!! did they contact you via phone?

  5. I'm going to Germany! I got moved up from alternate status for Germany Research by snail mail to my permanent address. It was postmarked April 22. I did not receive an email at all. I know sydneyviscous is an alternate as well, so just letting you know.

I am so siked, my god... Is there anyone else who received a Germany Research? I searched the thread and couldn't find any, just ETAs. Orientation for Research is not in K

  6. I received an email asking me to call in. After the sixth or seventh call, I spoke with the program director of the Asia-Pacific program who informed me that "additional funding" was now available for the region I applied to. Are you waiting on the list too, top5678? Best of luck!!!

Yes, I am on the wait list too, but for a different country. It is for an ETA position, I found out that I am high on the alternate list. The country initally sent out letters postmarked on March 26, so I figure that if I did get moved to principal status, I will either get the envelope, and email, or a call soon since it's been about a month...hopefully... haha

  7. There is hope, Alternates. I just got word that I'm off the alternate's list for Thailand. "Additional funding" became available and they're offering me a full grant. Stay optimistic, alternates! I'm rooting for your guys and gals!!

Congrats!!! How did you find out???

  8. Hang in there alternates! I just found out that I've been awarded a Fulbright to the UK from my alternate status. I received an email directly from the host country programme.

Look forward to meet the other UKers in London!

Congratulations!!! If you don't mind me asking, when were you notified (postmark date) of your alternate status??

  9. Sometimes they send out a manilla envelope--my roommate was an alternate for Russia ETA and just received notice of principal status selection today via snail mail.

wow, nice!!! tell your roommate i said congratulations! do you happen to know when Russia ETAs were notified? i'm just curious about how long it took for them to send your roommate the envelope out after the one month answering period.

  10. I called Rachel today and she said I am the only alternate. There are three people who have been slected. Do you think I stand a chance?

hmm, i think so. just keep your head up, they have one month to accept or decline. you'll know sooner or later anyhow! :D

  11. Ahhhh Arab Time! I knew it would take forrrrever.

My proposal is for anthropology research regarding refugees in Amman. I've studied Arabic for four years and lived in the ME for a year, but I've never been to Jordan. What is your proposal, and what is your Arabic language experience?

Any other info you'd care to disclose? I can share that apparently our letters of affiliation do not factor into the decision making process for finalists. It's more of a screening process for the national round.

Also, the orientation would be 23-27 June in DC, and 6-10 Sept in Amman @ the Fulbright House.

Further, our campus interview reports numerically ranked us (not against other applicants, but according to a rubric), and I hear that the national committee ranks us (against other applicants -- anyone else care to confirm this?) by order of preference for all those recommended to a specific country, and that the in-country selection committee usually takes these rankings from the national committee into strong consideration when making their final decisions. After that, the in-country selections must be approved by the State Department. If anyone has heard otherwise, please correct me.

    Cheers.

The advisors at my school told me different, i don't think your are totally correct on the ranking part. But close. The way it works is:

    1. School ranks your app at the time of campus interview. ranking 1-5 based on strength of your app, not against others.

    2. Sent off to NY, not ranked in any order at all, just sent as recommended. i.e., 4 grants available, will send 6-8 w/o ranking

    3. Host country ranks. This is how it works. So, for instance, if NY sent 8 apps, they will rank 1,2,3,4. 1-4 gets the grant. I'm not sure how many alternates are named, but some obviously get rejected.

Do any full grant alternates out there know the reason why we cannot be told of our position on the alternate list for our particular country? I do not understand why they would withhold this from us. I feel entitled to have this information at this point, so that I can plan my summer and have a better idea about whether i should move on with my life...

I don't blame them for not saying. They won't say probably because they don't want to get any hopes up. What if they say you are the first alternate, but no funding comes and every principal candidate accepts? that would stink, and i imagine this might be a reason they don't say. i imagine they don't have a large amount of alternates, but most likely a healthy amount with just enough cushion based on previous year grant decliners. just assume you're not going to get it, and if you do that's a nice bonus. don't sit here and wait. my campus rep also said there is roughly a 30% chance to get it. but go ahead and start searching for other things.

  12. yeah, i'm an alternate for spain eta right now. it really stinks, i put off grad school for a year (bad idea since jobs are sooo freakin hard to get) and now i regret it. i don't mind waiting, but i have a feeling that my chances for getting the grant aren't realistic. congrats on your eta grant though, that's awesome. hopefully they'll find some extra funding for the spain program. there are 43 eta positons, i wonder how many alternates there are.

  13. parabola, what/where did you apply to?

also, where di they send you a letter to? permanent address? was it a manila envelope?

congrats! your an alternate, you still have a realistic chance! keep ur head up.
