  1. Congrats to all of the ALTERNATES being promoted to primaries! It's such good news!

I'm not sure if the individual managing the spreadsheet is still on this forum but it would be great to add this to the sheet.

Also, any ALTERNATES contemplating reapplying, and if so, are you starting the process now?

I'm wondering about reaching out to my contacts in Morocco, primarily those that supported my work, notifying them of my status, and asking them to support me again if I don't hear back.

I am an alternate ETA candidate for Venezuela. I would like to reapply next year, but I am struggling to go about altering my personal statement and statement of grant purpose. My skill set and interests that I described in my essays were very similar to the profile of the desired candidate that the Venezuelan Fulbright Commission described on the Fulbright website. I am not sure how much I will change over a year's time.

  2. Hey PDX503,

Congrats on receiving principal status. I am an alternate candidate for Venezuela. As you might guess, I am a little bummed, but the application process was still a great way for me to get super focused on my strengths, weaknesses, future interests. I hope that you have a great experience.

  3. Interesting. How did you figure this out? I wonder why this is the case... and are we the only ones in this situation? And I wonder... does this mean that we're the ones who have to bear the majority of the brunt of funding cutbacks? For example, if Germany is required to fund 30 grants, but the budget is reduced from 2011-2012, do they fulfill the Germany commitment at the expense of Caribbean scholarships? Or do they just reduce grant amounts across the board...

Well, if it's that case that our funding is contingent upon other regions, we should be hearing aaaaany minute (day?) now... Are we officially the last region to hear? Or are there others out there still waiting.

Venezuela has not determined principal candidates yet either

  4. I think you got it wrong my friend. That is NOT, based on my understanding, what Fulbright is about. Your vision of Fulbright's mission is selfish. Fulbright is not about US as researchers or foreigners. The program is about others and our ability to interpret their vision of the world; our ability to put ourselves in their shoes in an effort to project another side of the story. As a prospective Fulbrighter, my mission is to listen, learn, and admire my population of interest. My mission is certainly not about me learning a new language or becoming less racist.

Good points. I agree that listening, learning, and admiring my population of interest is my mission as well.

I guess I was trying articulate multiple perspectives that I observe on this blog. I can see why the tone of my writing in the last paragraph might sound selfish. I agree that the primary goal is not to work on one's dissertation or improve one's language skills.

Also, diversity to me includes many different things such as occupation, class, race, sexual orientation, geographic place you call home, etc...

Also, one of the Fulbright's goals is to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." (check my source here http://us.fulbrighto....org/about.html). I guess that's why used the phrase, "]the Fulbright's goal to build mutual cooperation among diverse peoples in our own country"

Finally, I can only speak from my own experiences. From what I observe on a daily basis, there are still great barriers in this country between people who identify themselves differently.

Where are you hoping to get placed?

  5. May not happen, fulbright grants may not exist, maybe the people who got them thus far are robots meant to trick others

Better put, the fulbright is an economic resource that allows one to communicate directly with individuals in another country primarily through academic research and teaching experience.

The truth is that we, Americans, have not yet completely satisfied the Fulbright's goal to build mutual cooperation among diverse peoples in our own country. I know that, whether or not I receive the Fulbright grant, there I still people outside my door who I am afraid and that I don't understand. I know that there are academic and teaching opportunities in my city that will allow me to confront the barriers I place between myself and others who I dislike simply because I don't understand the circumstances of their life and/or their perspective on what constitutes an ideal life.....

So maybe I've got some money to finish my dissertation, improve my Spanish, and walk into a new light, but I am who I am, and I know that there are others outside my door who I don't know and who I'd like to meet........

  6. Venezuela was supposed to be notified by "the end of this month," but I am starting to loose hope . . . I feel like there is no end in sight!!

    Hey PDX503,

I feel you. It is really hard for me to focus on completing my final exams and papers without knowing the outcome.

For sure, we will know by May 15.

  7. Hey PDX,

I would prefer Caracas, but as you also say my main interest is working with youth, so I imagine that even if I am placed elsewhere, I will be happy.

The end of the month is near.....

    Hi AFX^79-

I guess you it's just the two of us on here then (you are the other person I was thinking of).

My preference would be Merida or Caracas, rather than Maracaibo. However, I am really open and mostly hoping to work with youth. What about you?

The count down begins, 7 weekdays until the end of the month (I don't know if they send out notifications during the weekend). So I hope we will know very soon!

  8. Hey PDX503,

I e-mailed Jody last week and have heard nothing at the moment. Also, I may be the other person you are thinking of. I changed my old username, limeandlimpedgreen56 to my current one, which is easier for me to remember.

Where do you hope to be placed?

Hey there! I also applied for an ETA in Venezuela (I believe there is one other person on this thread as well). I e-mailed Jody at the beginning of the month and asked her when she suspected we would know. She said "Hopefully by the end of this month." I'm keeping my fingers crossed for next week, but sounds like it's no guarantee:( I am sure you could e-mail her again and ask for an update on the date. If you do, please share her response:)

  9. I didn't apply for any of those countries, however I'm an undergrad applicant and I did transfer schools. I seem to remember though that the Fulbright only asked for a transcript from the school from which you'll be earning your degree. Are you worrying that your original school didn't send a copy to the them? Because I don't think that was actually necessary.

People that were missing transcripts received an email from Fulbright a while back... there were posts about it a month or a couple months ago. If you didn't receive the email, I would assume that your transcripts made it. The fact that there is another person also waiting for the same grant suggests that Venezuela applicants haven't been notified yet. Plus, there's still plenty of the Western Hemisphere left to notify.

    Hey Biz and Kerly_Cue,

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I just to need to be a little bit more patient. The head of the Fulbright board is visiting my school tomorrow to speak with rising seniors about the program, and I am so tempted to go there to ask him about my application. I know that's mad unprofessional and that he probably does not know, but that I was my first reaction when I saw the announcement. Here's to hoping we all find out soon.

Biz, what are you planning to study in Latvia?

    Kerly_Cue, where did you apply?

  10. Hey everybody,

Congrats to all the Armenia, Turkey, Spain, and Croatia folks!

I am wondering if someone knows anyone who has been accepted for a Venezuela Full or ETA Grant. I am a recommended ETA candidate, but I have heard nothing since January 31. The reason why I ask is that it seems like every other South American country has already sent their decisions to principal candidates based on the spreadsheet, and I am having fears that my transfer undergraduate institution forgot to send my transcript to the Fulbright Committee, thereby removing me from the competition.

Anything anyone knows is much appreciated!

Keeping the good vibes on for everyone else!

  11. Hey all,

Congrats to all the Euro and Caucus folks out there who have heard back. To the South American crew, can anyone enlighten me as to when the rest of the countries will hear back? Looking at past years' spreadsheets, it looks as if the end of March was the most popular time.

  12. Hi All! I am new here. I was selected as a finalist for an ETA in Venezuela. Does anyone know the usually timeline for the selection process for this country? Also how do I find the spread sheet that people are referring to?

Hey there, looks like there are just two of us on this blog, as of right now. Where are you hoping to get placed?

  13. I am originally from Venezuela, if you have questions just let me know!! Did you apply for Caracas?

Hey, I didn't apply specifically to Caracas, but I wrote my essays emphasizing skills I have gained that would be useful for teaching youth in a big city like Caracas. I have spoken with a couple Venezuelans who used to live in the city, and have done a decent amount of research about the city's history.

Are you from Caracas? What can I expect life to be like if I am placed there? Even if you are not from Caracas, is there anything you think is interesting or useful to know about daily life in Venezuela?

How is the Fulbright process going for you?

  14. Hi all,

Congratulations to all applicants who have been accepted thus far.

I am arriving late to the blogosphere for post-undergrad/grad and doctoral thesis scholarships. I am a recommended Venezuelan ETA applicant. Does anyone know anything about the notification date?
