Hi everyone, I'm planning to apply to a cultural anthro PhD program to start in fall 2010. I'm having a really tough time finding programs that fit my interests, though. I want to study legal anthropology (and get a JD degree as well) with a regional focus on the Middle East. An ideal program for me would have a strong Arabic language program and the flexibility to get a JD concurrently with the PhD. I'm also very interested in refugee/migration studies. I haven't taken the GRE yet, but I can't imagine scoring anything noteworthy on the math portion. My GPA is pretty good, I have good letters of recommendation, and lots of field research/undergrad awards/language experience. I'm also about to do a Fulbright in the Mid East. Can anyone recommend: 1) programs to look into 2) what I can do in the next 1.5 years to ensure admissions to a top school Thanks!!

Has anyone heard anything from North Africa/Near East recently? Anything at all?

Question about medical clearance: Was a normal doctor able to perform all the tests, or did you have to go to a travel clinic or something? I'm concerned that my local medical facilities won't be able to do some of the tests. Has anyone had trouble completing the form?

Interesting...My proposal also has to do with refugees, specifically taking the oral histories of Iraqi refugees. I've got about 3 years of Arabic, but off and on. I've lived in North Africa and the Gulf, but also never been to Jordan. I'm an at-large candidate, so i never did an interview. Keep me updated as you hear more!

I'm also a finalist to Jordan. Spoke with Jermaine Jones late last week and was told the Jordanian committee still hasn't decided. I also emailed the Jordan office, and according to them it's looking like mid May. What's your proposal?

At least your letter is on the way! My country committee HASN'T EVEN MADE DECISIONS YET, let alone forwarded them to the NY office. :|

Any news from North Africa/Middle East?

FYI - I emailed the Jordanian committee about the notification time frame for research awards, and apparently they're not going to notify until the last week of April.
