  1. I completed my undergraduate degree in ECE from a reputed institution in India. I have been working as an Automotive Vision Software Engineer since the last two years. I am interested in Computer Vision and Machine Learning (particularly object recognition and large-scale computer vision). I have been admitted to the M.S. programs in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University and USC. I need some help in deciding my final destination: (1) Which is a better university considering the research opportunities for M.S. students in these areas at Columbia and USC? My ultimate goal is to get a PhD. (2) How is the academic flexibility at both the universities as I would like to take some courses in my area of interest that are listed in the CS department.

  3. I completed my undergraduate degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from a reputed institution in India. I have been working as an Automotive Vision Software Engineer with a large multi-national company since the last two years. I have been admitted to the M.S. program in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. I am interested in Computer Vision and Machine Learning (particularly object recognition and large-scale computer vision). I had mentioned my interest to work with a professor in this area who is cross-listed in both the EE and CS departments. But I am having trouble getting the professor to commit to allowing me into his group prior to me actually going there this Fall and talking to him in person, Considering my current situation, it would be great if I could get some help my queries below: (1) How is the research in these areas at Columbia University? My ultimate goal is to get a PhD. I have heard that the school has a good brand name that would be valuable. I wanted to know if it is common to go to another school for the PhD program after completing MS from a different school in the US? (2) I also wanted to know more about the location. Since most of the software tech companies and startups are located on the west coast (from what I've heard), do students attending east coast schools like Columbia get enough job opportunities there? Thanks for any thoughts that you may have!
  4. leofanxiong, May I know what is your area of interest and when did you apply? Thanks.
  5. Any more news on PhD admits by Maryland? Cannot see any other recent updates on the results page.
  6. Stanford EE has sent out a lot of PhD admits already (as seen on the Results page). Does anybody know whether they have already sent all admits or whether we can still expect some positive results?
  7. That's surprising! I have applied for the PhD program in Computer Science. I called them up yesterday and they said that admits are still being rolled out. Applicants would hear back by the next week.
  8. I had similar doubts when I was applying. Hope this thread by a CS PhD student there helps.
  9. I had taken the Magoosh Verbal-only section and absolutely loved their material. It was one of the best Verbal prep material for me and the course helped me achieve my target score. The questions were very similar to what I encountered on the actual exam. Additionally, I found the video explanations to each question absolutely fantastic. It helped me understand how to get to the answer and learn important strategies required for the exam.
