That's what I got! Talking to a friend who got it first round, she was being chewed up! (I don't know what exact ratings she got though). I wonder why we weren't first round. For my I think it might be because I am probably the first person ever from my undergrad to get the award and I probably could have chosen a better/more appropriate division to be in.

I still get a 404 error for my rating sheets. Anyone else?

Higgins, I'm so glad you got one too! Sorry to the folks who didn't get one. I hope everyone still has funding and HM is really something to be proud of. Talk to anyone who was flat out rejected.

Sorry I couldn't think when I typed that one. Congrats all and of course I hope those of you who need it got it.

I'm not saying the Wings won't win. I'm just saying I don't want them to. Here's to hoping!

LOL of course. Anyone but the Red Wings. Though I do laugh at the possibility of this year's Stanley Cup having the same exact teams as last year's did. That being said, I'd rather see the Hawks in it. Go Pens and Hawks!

Wow this board took off today and over the weekend. Good luck all and thanks for the condolence messages from a few pages ago. I'm going to get back to working in lab I've been surprisingly productive today. By the way, Go Penguins!!

Actually a lot of us (or based on people who talk on the board) emailed them weeks ago to confirm our status as "pending". Yes, not "in limbo" but "pending party" doesn't sound as good as "limbo party" so we kept our term for it.

HM is still something to be proud of. Yeah, it'd be nice if it had a bit of money attached to make you prouder, but it certainly beats outright rejection. I've already celebrated mine and I want the end to come so I can tell people without having to explain the situation. Sure my parents don't understand that's its not the same as honorable mention in science fairs (where that is the participation prize name). Tomorrow is the 2mth anniversary of my brother's death, so maybe the results will come out then. I don't mind HM because I know that family obligations have seriously changed my grad plans anyhow. For those of you who need this to stay in grad school, I wish you luck.

Lol I was about to say "Now that we got the east coasters outta here" I'm totally kidding though. I used to be an east coaster too.

Before it just wasn't letting you on it. Now it gives an error, but it has done that before w/ no problem... just playing devil's advocate.

I've already celebrated my HM. I just wish I didn't have to explain it to people. Although I'm pretty sure my parents don't understand that HM here is a bit diff than HM at the county science fair. lol

At least there are 2 game 7's tonight (Stanley Cup playoffs... aka hockey), so I have a way to keep busy!
  17. SHORE is a sweet deal and I have that too. Just don't get fooled. They keep going back and forth on whether or not we get to move around. You are guaranteed housing the full time of your degree which is sweet, but unless they pair you with another SHORE student, you might feel like you have a revolving door because everyone else is limited to 2 yrs. That being said, I have a lot of labmates/friends who have lived with random people and most of them have had good experiences. The only one I know who isn't happy is because she got a roommate who has a ton of random food allergies that make it really annoying to share a kitchen with the person. Anyhow, since their policy right now is to make you keep the apt you start in, make sure it's one you really really want to live in. I'm stuck in 4th floor "city" view so I just got my rent jacked up $40 but its still cheaper for me (w/o a car) to live here. I'd avoid building 2 b/c it faces the highway and has a lot of noise from that (unless it is a courtyard view). Also, 1st floor with a patio is useless (and they all have it) b/c you have nothing to tie your stuff to (or 95% of them don't) so it gets stolen... I've had friends whose reg plants (w/ no fruits/veggies) got stolen. Mesa/Miramar is nice b/c a lot of grads live here. It's nice to be a 2 min walk from someone's dinner/party/event.

I'm going to say the flu is worse... and this is from someone waiting for the NSF who had a lab mate come in with a fever... but he tried to play it off as "okay" b/c he had a mask on... yeah.

At least your advisor talks to you and knows you applied and are in limbo... I think my advisor might remember I applied. Just trying to help you look on the bright side of things.

Taken straight from the wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limbo): "In Roman Catholic theology, Limbo (Latin limbus, edge or boundary, referring to the "edge" of Hell) is an idea about the afterlife condition of those who die in original sin without being assigned to the Hell of the damned. Limbo is not an official doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church or any other. Medieval theologians described the underworld ("hell", "hades", "infernum") as divided into four distinct parts: hell of the damned (which some call gehenna), purgatory, limbo of the fathers, and limbo of infants. The Limbo of the Patriarchs or Limbo of the Fathers (Latin Limbus Patrum), also the Bosom of Abraham or Paradise, is seen as the temporary state of those who, in spite of the personal sins they may have committed, died in the friendship of God, but could not enter Heaven until redemption by Jesus Christ made it possible. The term "Limbo of the Fathers" was a medieval name for the part of the underworld (Hades) where the patriarchs of the Old Testament were believed to be kept until Christ's soul descended into it by his death[1] through crucifixion and freed them (see Harrowing of hell). The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes Christ's descent into "hell" as meaning primarily that "the crucified one sojourned in the realm of the dead prior to his resurrection. This was the first meaning given in the apostolic preaching to Christ's descent into hell: that Jesus, like all men, experienced death and in his soul joined the others in the realm of the dead." It adds: "But he descended there as Saviour, proclaiming the Good News to the spirits imprisoned there." It does not use the word "Limbo".[2] The Limbo of Infants is a hypothesis about the permanent status of the unbaptized who die in infancy, too young to have committed personal sins, but not having been freed from original sin. Since at least the time of Augustine, theologians, considering baptism to be necessary for the salvation of those to whom it can be administered have debated the fate of unbaptized innocents, and the theory of the Limbo of Infants is one of the hypotheses that have been formulated as a proposed solution. Some who hold this theory regard the Limbo of Infants as a state of maximum natural happiness, others as one of "mildest punishment" consisting at least of privation of the beatific vision and of any hope of obtaining it. This theory, in any of its forms, has never been dogmatically defined by the Church, but it is permissible to hold it. Recent Catholic theological speculation tends to stress the hope that these infants may attain heaven instead of the supposed state of Limbo; however, the directly opposed theological opinion also exists, namely that there is no afterlife state intermediate between salvation and damnation, and that all the unbaptized are damned.[3]" I kinda like the limbo term, especially now knowing there are two divisions of it. There are those of us who will be "lifted up" to a fellowship and those of us who will stay in Honorable Mention (which is a sort of limbo because most of us have no use for supercomputer time... and we'll always have to decide whether or not to include it in "awards earned" lists). Okay at the fear I already took this too far I'll end now. An no... I'm not trying to say NSF Fellowship = heaven, but it works for the metaphor.

Did you include your applicant ID number? I got a fast reply and had included mine in the email. I'd guess it makes it easier for them to find us on the system.

My understanding of the award process (based on the PDF I and others posted a few days ago), is that they select a few just based on merit/quality of app ~7-8% of applicants and then they pull from the HM's to even out some of the demographics (location, gender, subject, etc) so I'd imagine that selecting even 50-100 apps this way would be a long process. But you're right, I don't believe they were ever going to re-read and score our essays.

All I can say is get used to it. The NSF is like a pretty girl/guy that turns you down but hints that if you ask enough times you might get a date. I've had a "F the NSF" drinking night with my previous PI.
