Thanks a lot socspice - that was really helpful. I was really hoping to see some more top, urban-situated universities on that list. Need to find someone to work with in a good sized city with a university that has a good MPP program for the wife!

Thanks guys! I should also mention I'm interested in urban sociology and spatial stratification. I'm just as interested in the built environment as the natural environment.

I know there's not really 'environmental sociology' per se, but could you guys recommend some prominent scholars at top schools who deal with environmental issues? I'm interested in the effects and culture of decarbonisation, social construction of disaster, and conceptions of 'nature'. Thanks for your help.

I don't really want to turn this into a debate about rankings, as I know they're not too useful. I just see a lot of people referring to 'top 40' programs and 'top 10' programs as if it's common knowledge. I know there are certain schools that are obviously top 10 (Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley), but I'm just wondering what ranking system you guys are going by?
Oxford/Cambrige for US think tanks?

Is this something that is possible/reasonable? Especially enviro/energy policy and development. Is London (LSE/UCL) better in this instance?
