Hello, I'm in the progress of applying for grad schools, and was wondering which is a better program in terms of job replacement? Also, I graduated with a Stats degree, so although I do have some programming experience (intro to Java, intro to C++, extensive use of R for statistical computing), is it enough for a bioinformatics program? Also would a Phd or masters program be better? I feel a Phd degree will open up opportunities for higher level jobs, but will also significantly narrow the job field. Thanks for any input!

Freshman year I went to a prestigious college in Boston and basically caved under the pressure, ending up with less than a 3.0 gpa. Then, I transferred to a school back home (not Ivy League by any means, but a decent school), was on the Dean's list every semester, and graduated with a 3.8 gpa (3.9 in major courses). Will this ruin my chances of getting into a good graduate program? In the additional comments section, should I write some sort of explanation on my application? Thanks for any input!
