  1. I think Boston University has a terminal MA program
  2. I'm interested in syntax but also syntax-pragmatics-- and I clearly want to stay on the east! I'd say UCSB, for you, probably ins't the best fit since they do way more ling anth than theoretical-- but santa cruz is awesome! I kind of want to apply just because.... (I'm applying to PhD-- what about you?)
  3. For people applying to go to grad school in Linguistics in Fall 2013...where are you applying? I am still figuring out my final list. So far: UMass Amherst Yale Maryland Delaware
  4. thanks! this is helpful. UMass amherst is my top choice I think. any thoughts on UConn? It's quite small but the locaiton is good for me-- not sure how I feel about hte program though. Anyone have thoughts on Maryland or Delaware either? gotta start seriously working on apps....
  5. What is an appropriate tone for a statement of purpose? I'm trying to be very formal but I think it's not like an academic paper, either! Casual is no good, I know, but sometimes I think revisions that my advisor suggestions are.... just too formal! Trying to be succinct and consice and all that, but this is hard! Any thoughts?
  6. I think schools like specificity-- but what do I know, I haven't gotten in yet! I think being able to give a sense of what you'd like to focus on is helpful because then you can see if profs at a school are a good match or not. Something I'm trying to remind myself is that I can always change my mind...ONCE I AM IN GRAD SCHOOL! Don't just make stuff up, but I think it's okay to just postulate what you might be interested in.....
  7. I went to boulder, too, and I am putting it in my SOP because it explains more of my background (i am not from a known undergrad program) and I think overall it's kind of impressive to go as an undergrad (or so says my advisor)
  8. I am applying to PhD programs this fall (theoretical-- interested in pragmatics-syntax interface etc) and for non-academic reasons it would probably be best for me to stick close to my family-- so New England or the greater Northeast area of the US. Any suggestions on programs? I feel like there aren't all that many-- Umass Amherst, UPenn, MIT and BU in Boston, UConn has something small.... any thoughts?
  9. Not all programs need a BA-- just some backgroudn and proof that you can study and learn, pick it up, and know what the studying will entail. Maybe a masters program is a good place to start?
