nope. that budget is for FY10. we're waiting on the results of the FY09 competition. what's holding it up is approval for how they will spend ARRA funds (see post above).

Another place to keep looking for updates on NSF's progress with its ARRA plan: http://www.recovery.gov/?q=content/week ... kly-report

word. i applied for a TA job last week. i suppose i'll just operate under the assumption i'll be doing that. be well folks.

and so it is settled. i guess we just, you know, wait... so unsettling. also, thanks for the info from your inside source.

another old pdf: http://www.ams.org/ams/SummaryReportCSP ... ch2009.pdf money quote: "Joel Parriott Program Examiner, Science and Space Programs Branch, White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Joel Parriott

don't think this is correct. pretty sure grfp is in the research category (which just got a $2b boost, out of a total $3b for NSF, between the omnibus and the ARRA).

ncseonline.org/conference/CEDD%20-%20ARRA%20&%20Omnibus%20Funding.pdf Quote: National Science Foundation (NSF) Stimulus money will only fund a few new solicitations and no continuing awards; most new and continuing awards will be funded through FY 09 regular appropriations. Exceptions are: ? early/new investigator awards ? CAREER awards - funded for full five years ? Graduate Research Fellowships and other similar scholarship programs

If i recall correctly, there hasn't been anything on the task list since the application was submitted.

I'm pretty sure the $125 came from omnibus bill, which was an addendum to the FY09 budget. The Obama budget proposal currently being debated is for 2010. which means that additional money is already going to the grfp, so that is a baseline for any increases. stimulus money would be on top of that.

i didn't read it as particularly discouraging. They emphasize the word "may" because they don't want to make any promises. but i think it's clear (from the links posted above) that some more awards will be made. If they requested funds for 3000 awards (and there are about 1000 already awarded, and 2000 of us), they clearly want to fund all of us. the house cut the budget significantly, so we won't all get funded, but there is a significant increase in the grfp budget. we'll see what that turns into.
-
thanks for the links... also, i suggest folks call the 866 number, just to ease your minds. the recording has changed (i guess i called too late to talk to a person), but they have cleared up the language, and the make clear that all rejections have been sent out, and that the people left are HMs or awards.
-
i imagine only some of the 2000 are being considered for more awards. some of us will get HMs, but are probably not being considered. there are too many unkowns, i guess-- we don't know where we are in the ranking, we don't know how many additional awards will go out, we don't know if the additional awards will go to our field or others.

"end fellow stats" just refers to the column of information about you on the right-hand side of the page. everyone will have it, because it refers to the "end" of that column of stats about you. it means nothing.

i think the major lesson to draw from that is that they are focusing most of the new money on funding existing applications (including grfp) that are already in their system, including grants they otherwise would not have funded, as opposed to new grants. no, this is not all going to grfp, but it seems a sizable chunk may very well be.

If folks have some tips, perhaps we should share widely? I'm still in limbo, but I'm operating under the assumption that an award is not forthcoming. I'd love to hear from folks who did get the award, on what worked. That said, this might be a conversation we should have after our rating sheets come back (both for positive and negative responses).

she does sound a bit breathless, but at least she's trying... i'm sure we've been driving them crazy with our calls. i suppose the language is ambiguous, but, as others have mentioned, i don't see why budget constraints would affect the number of HMs in relation to rejections. it does make sense that budget concerns would affect the number of HMs in relation to awards. there will probably be few awards out of that pool, but it doesn't make sense to me that there would be rejections. also, i think that this forum may be driving us to perceive the number of folks in limbo as higher than it actually is. most of the applicants i know either got it, or got rejected (in fact, everyone i've talked to, except for myself). my guess is those of us in limbo now are essentially the HMs, but that the office is holding out to see if they can offer awards to a few more people.
-
I encourage people to put in a call at 866 673 4737. right now, there is a recording; if my interpretation is correct, the woman says that all rejections were sent out, and that HMs and any additional awards will be announced at a later date. If you call tomorrow during the day, you can talk to someone in the call center, as I did earlier today. they can tell you definitively if you are still being considered, or if you have been rejected...
-
you can try members of the house budget committee. check if any of the following are your rep: http://budget.house.gov/members.shtml also try the senate: http://budget.senate.gov/democratic/democrats.html they did already pass the budget resolution a few days ago, i think. does anyone know what bargaining is actually happening now?

I called earlier today, and they said my application was still under review. Though the man I spoke to did not say so outright, he implied that rejections had already been sent out, and that I was being considered for an HM or an award. I don't think that those currently in limbo just haven't received their rejection yet. If you are anxious, I suggest you call, and they will probably tell you what they told me. What it means, then, is that we just have to wait. Who knows what criteria they are using to select the few remaining awards; it is likely that only some of us in limbo are being considered at all. But, the list of HMs just won't be released until they finalize the list of awardees. As for me, I'm assuming I got an HM, and will be using my scoring sheets to retool my application for next year (and for other fellowships to which I will apply). Unlike others on this board, I do really need the money, so i will take this lesson and try again. If I end up getting an award, that would be great, but I'm done being anxious about it. Especially since the man I spoke to would not give me a timeline for the coming decisions-- it could be next week, it could be May. I don't presume to tell anyone what to do or how to feel, but for your own sakes, I suggest to fellow limbo dwellers that you do the same.
