it is going to vary depending on the state....as of now there is an overabundance of teachers in most states as a result of cuts that stem from the economy and such....it can take years in some places to get a job and others will get hired right away. In addition, areas like Math Special Ed and Science are in much greater demand than history or english, so that will have a much bigger impact. WIth that being said you shouldn't be discouraged to pursue the career you want, just be mindful of the work involved and that many lawmakers and such are demonizing teachers b/c of the handful who do in fact suck, as well as ignorance among the public. (Have had a pay freeze for 3 years in my district) On the bright side, MANY teachers will be retiring soon b/c of their age and to get out before new retirement laws etc come into effect. Likewise, there has been a decrease in teacher ed students in many states as a result of the recent hiring woes of so many teachers so it is cyclical, just 8 years ago there was a shortage in my state and ill-qualified teachers were hired. Good luck with your decision.
