Larissa Goulart Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Hi Guys I was wondering who else applied for PhDs in Applied Linguistics dept for this fall? I have applied to some Programs and have received decisions from 3 of them, it would be nice to have some people in the same situation to talk to.
Bailey Momo Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Hi Larissa, I also applied applied linguistics/second language studies doctoral programs for 2018 Fall admission. I applied for five schools, including NAU. But so far I received decision letters from two schools. For NAU, I submitted my application in late Jan. but I haven't heard back. May I ask were you interviewed by the entire admissions committee or you were interviewed by professor(s) you are interesting in working with? And may I ask which schools you have received decision letters? Thanks!
Larissa Goulart Posted February 25, 2018 Author Posted February 25, 2018 Hi Bailey I applied toNorther Arizona University : Applied Linguistics Admitted - I was interviewed by two professors, one of them I am interested in working with. Iowa State University: Applied Linguistics and Technology - Admitted - I was also interviewed by two professors none of them I am interested in working with. Georgia State: Applied Linguistics - Waiting - I was interviewed by two professors, one of them I am interested in working with. University of Nebraska: Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education - AdmittedUmass Boston: Applied Linguistics - Waiting for their decision University of Arizona: SLAT - Waiting for their decision Umass Amherst: Language, literature and Culture: waiting for their decision What are your options so far? By the way are you the person with whom I have been kind of messaging in the NAU results page?
Bailey Momo Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Hi Larissa, I applied five schools for 2018 Fall admission: 1. University of Hawaii at Manoa, Second Lang. Studies-Admitted (2/23) 2. Michigan State University, Second Lang. Studies-Rejected (I think I was on the shortlist but was rejected; I guessed my TOEFL score is the major factor). (2/2) 3. NAU Applied Linguistics -waiting for decision (they seem to send interview invitations/acceptance in wave. I applied in late Jan. Not sure if it is because I submitted my application late, so they will review my application later. When did you submit your application for this particular school?) 4. Georgetown University-Applied Linguistics-waiting for decision (program secretary told me they hope to communicate decisions in early March). 5. Georgia State University-Applied Linguistics (submitted Jan. 10, but haven't heard back as well ><; When were you interviewed by the faculty?). I think there are other applicants applying to NAU replied to your message in the NAU results page. I did post one message, though :).

I submitted my application to NAU late January as well, I almost gave up cause it was my last application and I was so tired of writing SOP's and tuition waivers, etc. My interview with GSU was on Monday last week, so you probably will be called for an interview soon as well - fingers crossed. What are your research interests, I'm guessing we must have something in common since we are applying for the same Programs.
Bailey Momo Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Congrats to you as well! You got admission to Iowa State U (their TOEFL requirement is way too high for me ><, so I gave up applying). I am interested in second language acquisition (esp. CALL-SLA interface, interaction approach, and instructed pragmatics), discourse analysis, research methods. I think NAU and GSU are particularly strong in corpus linguistics and discourse analysis, so that's why you stand a better chance of admission. By the way, are you an international student or American student? Let's keep our fingers crossed for the other schools we haven't heard back :)!
Larissa Goulart Posted February 25, 2018 Author Posted February 25, 2018 Yes, my focus is on Corpus Linguistics analysis and I think both programs are pretty strong on that. I'm an international student from Brazil, right now I'm at UNL teaching Portuguese. Def keeping my fingers crossed for our applications
