Hi All,

I am super conflicted and unsure of which school to attend.  I got into both NYU and GWU for the MPA, no aid from either (hoping that can change).

NYU was my #1 when I applied, but I am learning recently that NYU's MPA is more focused on domestic policy vs. international, which is what I want to do. I want to focus on international development/policy.  My friend who did NYU's MPA said she enjoyed it, but their career services aren't as strong as GWU. Over there, they really help you out with what to do after grad school.

I am also already living and working in DC, so it would be easier to transition to GWU, but at NYU I would live with family- living expenses are then covered.

I am super torn because I just want to pick the right school that will set me up for a strong future. Any thoughts or advice? I appreciate it!

If GWU is more in line with your long term career goals and you believe they'll provide you with better career support post-grad, then I think you should pick GWU.

Thanks megtree! I was told this by some of my friends in DC, but not certain that is really the case.

Have you researched both program's faculty? I'm also trying to choose between MPA programs ATM, and researching the prof's published work has been a useful exercise for me. For example, one of the programs I was accepted into markets itself as comprehensive with both policy and administration streams. However, upon researching the program's faculty more closely, I've realized that there are only two instructors with a policy focus, and both specialize in National Defence (I'm not interested in National Defence, and if I were, I have a better program option for it). That information, combined with the fact that policy coursework is only offered as an elective, allowed me to eliminate the program from my considerations.

If I were you, I'd research every single faculty member in each program, and note how many specialize in international policy (as well as their specializations within that broad policy field).  I think you'll get a better sense of what each program has to offer you once you've really dug in and assessed the overarching experience/interest of the program's instructors. Ideally, one program will stand out more because the faculty's research will be more aligned with your interests. Good luck! =)

That's a really good idea- thanks so much!!

Bumping this up again...soooo now I am leaning more towards NYU. I should have a clearer decision in 2 weeks when I visit both schools for their admitted students day. However, until then, does anyone have pros/cons for either NYU Wagner or GWU Trachtenberg

Thanks!
