Amani Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Hi, I'm an international student and don't know much about US universities yet. I want to apply for PhD programs in (Arabic) linguistics. My focus is on pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Could anyone recommend some universities (or programs) that combine linguistics and Arabic? I know about georgetown, but as they do not offer graduate housing I'm not sure whether to apply or not. Thanks for any help.
fuzzylogician Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Hm. I'm not sure what Arabic linguistics means really.. if you want to do studies on Arabic speakers, I don't think the US is necessarily the best place to have access to such speakers. However, most programs have funding available for field work so it is possible to do that; do inquire about that before you apply to programs, though. More generally, if you are interested in theoretical linguistics, then any good US program will allow you to concentrate on any language or language family that you choose. I'm not sure anyone here can give you too much insight; I certainly can't recommend anything except to go through the LSA list of linguistics programs and see what fits. I suggest you cross-post in the languages subforum, maybe someone there can help. Also, the availability of dorms should not be how you decide where to apply. I'm sure that they have apartments you can rent near Georgetown.
sohbetocean Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Hi! I did my MA in Arabic linguistics and almost completed a Phd in the same area (in the processes of switching programs). There are some great programs for those interested in sociolinguistics..I suggest you take a look at these in the US: 1) Georgetown, Arabic and Islamic Studies Dept, specifically Prof. Reem Bassiounney 2) University of Texas at Austin, ME Language Dept, specifically Prof. Kristen Brustad 3) University of Michigan, Arabic 4) University of Washington, Near Eastern Studies 5) University of Arizona, Near Eastern Studies 6) Ohio State University, Arabic 7) University of Maryland, Arabic 8) Cornell University Funding is available for PhD applicants. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message. I could probably help you more if I knew your specific sub-field within Sociolx. Atfaddali! Also, you might want to join the listserve, Arabic-L, for more information on what's new in the field of Arabic linguistics..... http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/arabic-l.html
psycholinguist Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Your best bet at Cornell would probably be Munther Younes, who does do Arabic linguistics (albeit mostly phonology). Graduate students apparently nominate several advising professors to a sort of committee that oversees their work, so you could probably select him and a couple of linguists. No one there is really doing a lot of sociolinguistics or pragmatics at the moment, though.
Amani Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 Thanks for the quick and really helpful replies.
Francesco Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Hi! I'm doing a PhD in Arabic linguistics/pragmatics myself. It'd be interesting to get to know each other! Here's my email: fls201@ex.ac.uk Good luck! Francesco Hi, I'm an international student and don't know much about US universities yet. I want to apply for PhD programs in (Arabic) linguistics.
