Hey all! I was accepted off the waitlist to northeastern and am trying to decide if that’s where I want to go (not like I have too many options, since I’m waitlisted at my other choices too but still). I’d love to connect with anyone currently in the program or starting in the fall to see how you like it and why you chose it. A few questions to get you started:

how are the professors? Are they clinically trained as well as academics?

Do students generally feel supported?

what is the atmosphere of the program?

and also- is it possible to do like an informal visit? I attended a graduate open house and got to see the clinic, but I’d love to check everything out again.

Thanks!

Hi! I'm a currrent NEU second year! Overall, I am happy with the program at NEU. Everyone is very knowledgeable and very supportive. There are the general logistical and administrative issues that probably happen at most programs, but I'm happy that this is the program I chose.

The professors are a mix of clinical and academic. We have top academic researchers in a number of different topics (AAC, TBI, Motor Speech, Infant Feeding, etc.), many of whom still practice clinically or have practiced clinically in the past. They are all very approachable and take the time to get to know their students.

I would say the students feel supported. Grad School can be very stressful and SLP programs have a lot of moving parts. Like I said before, the faculty is very approachable and actually enjoy interacting with and getting to know their students. At the same time, you are expected to take initiative and responsibility for your education.

Overall, the atmosphere is pretty collaborative. A lot of group projects and working with your classmates. While this field can be very competitive, the mix of students with a wide variety of interests and backgrounds helps to keep us from being competitive with each other. We all work together well, lots of study groups,, and sharing of materials and ideas.

Not sure about the informal visit. You will need to talk to Dr. Book as students are at their summer placements. I'm sure if you want to come stop by the clinic, something could be worked out.

Hope this helps :)
