burrito Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 hi all! i'm new here, and i'm looking for information about the nyu waitlist. does anyone know how many offers they made v how many they expect the yield to be? has the dgs been explicit with anyone about their chances or did you receive a vague "you're on a waitlist" email? any info would be much appreciated! it's my top choice school and i'm tentative to ask the dgs for concrete numbers.
ratiocinator Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 (edited) As another member of the NYU waitlist, I understand your impatience! NYU only has 9 fellowship spots this year, which means that they can only make offers to 9 people at a time. Every time somebody declines, they will make an offer to the next person on the list. As to how that list is organized—I can't really say. A professor was kind enough to get in touch and tell me that I've got a good chance of getting an offer in the next few weeks, but it wasn't an official or absolute notice by any means, and it all depends on how many currently admitted people decline their offers. If it helps, most programs (including NYU) usually make offers to about twice as many people as they expect to enroll, and based on what people were saying at the open house, a number of people had other offers toward which they were already leaning. I know this is frustrating, but it looks like we'll all in the dark—at least for the next few weeks, and possibly up to April 15. Have you asked for more details about your status? They're a very kind department, on the whole, and I'm sure they will give you as much information as they have. Good luck! Edited March 10, 2010 by ratiocinator
diehtc0ke Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 If it's any consolation, I think I'm going to be declining the offer I received from NYU. Not 100% sure yet but I'll be sure to be prompt about it when I am.

The DGS sent me an encouraging email saying I have high spot on the waitlist and so have a hope of getting an offer. But, judging from the number of people at the interviews, it is a lengthy waitlist. I do not know if they have it organized by field. I'm waiting on NYU and my longterm partner is waiting on Columbia (our top choices, respectively), so we have the additional anxieties about the possibility of having to live on opposite sides of the country for 5 to 6 years, enrolled at schools we are less enthusiastic about. A couple of the other schools I have offers from are very eager that I accept or decline before April comes so that they can make offers to their waitlisters, so I'm feeling pressured but I'll wait it out as long as I can. It's a shame they don't have more spots; everyone at the Open House seemed like interesting scholars and wonderful people. Many people I happened to speak to were leaning toward NYU (at least at that point in the process). Painful waiting, but good luck fellow waitlisters (at least you know you all deserve offers & that it is now coming down to the amount of money the dept has rather than your abilities)!
strokeofmidnight Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Including myself, I know of 4 students who will likely be turning down NYU's offer. (I'm waiting for a few other pieces to fall into place, but should be "moving" on this decision within a week...and will be encouraging my fellow acceptees to do the same if they're sure that they will not attend). It's a pretty awesome program and extremely strong in my field, but slightly less of an ideal fit for me. For those of you on the waitlist...good luck! I don't know how many were waitlisted. I can't imagine more than the 30 that were invited to the interview, and possibly less than that. I don't know if this is true for NYU, but at other programs, it's often to your advantage to let a program know that they're your top choice (if that is true, of course) if you're sitting on the waitlist.
burrito Posted March 17, 2010 Author Posted March 17, 2010 well, as it turns out the dgs was encouraging in his response to me too. so who knows. thanks for the info, guys. and good luck to everyone. and strokeofmidnight and diehtc0ke - thanks for being such considerate (pre-)colleagues! sigh.
