Multiple Infusions Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Has anybody heard anything from BU? They seem to be rather difficult to contact and I've found little regarding acceptances and rejections. Are we due for an onslaught of responses from the department?
Pierre Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I've been contacted by the dept. twice (Prof. Kolaczyk and Prof. Blanchard) regarding my application. Apparently the graduate school has misplaced some application materials when forwarding applications to the dept., in my case it was my transcripts. The second time it was a quick question about my educational background (I'm an international student). They are still actively going through applications (wrote this explicitly in one of the emails) and my impression is that they still haven't made all the decisions yet.
bumath Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 According to Grad Cafe record, at least one International student is given an offer (in statistics though). According to what I hear from a professor very recently, they've already made some offers and are waiting for responses to see if they will send more offers . So anyone who got offer from BU math who chooses not to go, please withdraw as soon as possible~~. Has anybody heard anything from BU? Pierre Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Forgot about this thread. I'm the international (at least if there is only one that have posted results) admitted to the stats dept. My impression is that they are still looking at applications and deciding, but perhaps bumath has more knowledge than I do (just extrapolating from what they've stated in emails). Might visit there soon - a little tricky since I'm in Europe right now - and will try to make a decision as quickly as possible. Any insights regarding the city of Boston or the dept. in general? If I don't visit I'll talk with some of the professors on the phone and I'll try to gain some knowledge regarding number of students they plan to admit etc. for the different programs and then post what I learn here. Good luck everyone!

Good luck everyone! The only thing I have to say about the department is that they seem difficult to contact if you have not been admitted; I've sent many emails and the only responses I have received have been via auto-reply. As far as the city goes, it seems rather big but isn't really that bad. Public transportation is great and so is the thriving academic culture (it's nicknamed "The Athens of America"). If you have a choice between having a car and not having a car, I recommend not; the city is notoriously bad to drive in, the city is a bit tricky to navigate and the drivers can be pretty aggressive. The area around the college is pretty nice, sort of the architypical collegiate atmosphere, but housing prices tend to drop off as you get farther from the campuses. Good luck visiting!
bumath Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Hi Pierre, BU math is quite a small department (at least in the pure math part) in terms of number of faculty or students, the advantage though, is you can take classes and seminars in neighboring Harvard and MIT. But generally it's almost impossible to take advisors from MIT or Harvard. The life in Boston, as Multiple Infusions pointed out, is pretty nice. But generally students don't own cars. the housing rent is just usual as in any major American cities. the public transportation is convenient. The winter is very long though, and can be really cold. It seems that you are admitted to UNC now? I think UNC ranks top 3-top5 in stat departments in USA, but of course, the most important thing in grad studies is the advisor, not just how big the department is. And I think you can take this chance to visit Boston and then make your decision! Best regards! Forgot about this thread.
