Hi

I am Neil. I have a doubt regarding backlogs.

I am going to give GRE in June and apply for Ph.d in Aerospace Engineering in fall 2011.

My profile :

10 - 90.6% Tamil Nadu state board.

12 - 89.83% Tamil Nadu state board.

B.E - 71% Aeronautical Engineering from Park college of Engg. & Tech affiliated to Anna University Chennai. with 20 backlogs. Even I took 4.5 years to complete the degree.

M.Tech - 8.31 out of 10. Aerospace Engineering IIT Kharagpur.

Currently I am working as project assistant in IISc Bangalore. I can get LOR from my IIT professor and IISc professor.

My doubt: will my history of backlogs in B.E ruin my chance to Ph.d Aerospace Engineering? will it be indicated in transcripts? what should i do? does this so called IIT tag hold only for B.Tech or even to M.Tech? what kind of universities (rank wise) do i have chance with this profile eventhough i do not have GRE score right now?

I am get confused. I am looking forward to your reply.

Hi Neil. You might find better feedback if you reposted this in the Applied Mathematics & Sciences Forum (subforum: engineering). Your questions are very specific to your field!

Best of luck.

Hi Neil,

I'd love to give you advice, but, being from the US, I'm at a loss as to what you're numbers actually mean.

For instance, what is a backlog? Whether or not this sort of thing will be on your transcript, I do not know. However, your university will know. Ask the registrar's office, or get a copy of your transcript for yourself and look at it. If you feel like you need to justify your poor performance in undergraduate, do so in your personal statement. This won't take away all of the problems, but if you provide a decent argument for yourself, then you can have a fighting chance.

I wish I could give you more advice, but I am at a loss as to converting your profile into units that I can understand.
