PastHistory Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Graduating from undergrad in May and just got the lovely forms regarding loan repayment beginning this fall on my Federal loans. I will be in grad school when the loans are scheduled for repayment. Will the school automatically submit some sort of deferment for me or do I need to fill out some sort of form? I didn't see anything about deferment on the paperwork. Also, this looks like it might just be for the Stafford loans...does anyone know if Stafford and Perkins loans are included on the same repayment form/schedule? Any help would be appreciated...my school's aid office is closed for the break.
reimaginethis Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 For the Stafford loan, call your lender and request a deferral form. You'll take the deferral form to your (grad) school's FA office and ask them to complete and return it. If it's a Direct Loan (meaning the lender is the US Dept of Education), go directly to the (grad) school's FA office and ask them to submit your enrollment info electronically. Perkins loans are a bit different because they are administered directly by the undergraduate institution. You'll need to contact your undergrad FA office to ask about deferral options.
Procrastinomic Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 This is sort of related...my undergrad loans have been in repayment for a few years, but now I'm starting a phd program in August. A friend who just graduated medical school told me that there is new legislation that forbids loan deferment for some graduate programs. Has anyone else heard of such a thing? I've looked at my loan websites and I don't see any changes, so I don't know if I'm missing it, or she's mistaken, or if it's something specific to medical school that wouldn't apply to me anyway. Any insights?
