KatieJ16 Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 (edited) Trying to decide between Duke's Department of Statistical Science and the University of Washington's Applied Mathematics Program??? They both seem great. I tentatively want to focus on Bayesian Statistics. A named fellowship at UW with zero teaching and at Duke do not need to TA until second year. Very similar good offers. How to decide??? Please help with any advice. I am a Californian currently an Applied and Computational Mathematics undergrad at Caltech. Edited March 5, 2019 by KatieJ16 add info
omicrontrabb Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 If you want to do bayesian statistics, you should definitely go to Duke for statistics. Multiple people on this forum have said that it is generally a bad idea to get PhDs in applied math/computational math/etc if you want to study statistics. UW has a great applied math department, but look at their research focuses and dissertation topics. They do not seem to have much focus on statistics.

bayessays Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 The only question to ask is whether you want to be a statistician or an applied mathematician. This is the type of department you're 95% likely to get a job in. If you want to study Bayesian statistics, you'd be crazy to go to UW applied math over Duke stats. Geococcyx 1
