I was looking at grad schools and noticed that a few of the professors I'm interested in working with are in both the pure and applied math departments. Are the applied math programs easier to get into than pure math ones? Do you think someone could apply to both departments, thereby increasing their odds?

At some schools the boundary is fluid; you can apply to one department and get an advisor in the other.

I applied to a mix of math and applied math departments.
