I was just wondering if anyone could better explain the significance of the April 15 deadline to me, as I'm a little unsure of the repercussions should I not accept an offer by then?

Unless you get an extension, they could take that as a rejection, and it certainly won't reflect well on you. Ask for an extension, if you need it.
