SeetherWasNot Posted February 21, 2020 Posted February 21, 2020 I’m interested in pursuing research in computational and systems biology (not really sure how much of each, and maybe structural biology would be nice too) and I’m somewhat restricted to staying in the NYC area. Right now I’m primarily considering Sloan Kettering and Columbia. Any thoughts on which one is better and/or more prestigious?
mmsseeff Posted February 26, 2020 Posted February 26, 2020 I'm assuming you didn't apply yet. Apply to both of them and decide when/if you get into either of them. Apply to other schools in the area too. Even very well-qualified candidates don't get accepted sometimes.
SeetherWasNot Posted February 27, 2020 Author Posted February 27, 2020 I'm a little limited in how many places I can apply to as well (and want to apply to the major universities outside of NYC) hence I'm restricting myself to one or two in NYC.
alltheclusters Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 Sloan Kettering isn't primarily a comp bio program, even though the comp bio faculty we have here is excellent and so is the student support (small class size, subsidized housing for your entire PhD, great insurance, etc.). I'm not sure about Columbia, but other comp bio programs in NYC that you can consider are Tri-i CBM (mostly computational) and Weill Cornell PBSB (which might fit well for you considering your interest in structural biology).
