sjcslp Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 Hi everyone! I have an interview with Georgia State in a couple weeks and I was wondering if anyone knew how their interviews usually go? I’ll be doing a video interview since I’m out of state, so I’ll be missing the tour and everything and I feel like that may put me at a disadvantage. Does anyone who interviewed last year or before know what kind of questions to expect? Thank you!!
loufinn137 Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 Congrats! I have an interview as well, and I'm local so I will be attending in-person. Since the interviews are held in 15 minute time slots I'm assuming it will be just a few general questions, but I can't say for sure. Best of luck!!
wodin Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 I live in-state but 5 hours away from Atlanta...I was not offered an option to do a video interview because I think they assume that I live close by. It feels a bit silly driving 5 hours for a 15 minute interview, but I'm afraid to request a video interview because this is my top choice school and I really don't want to give the impression that they aren't a priority. I would trust them to be fair about weighing the in-person and video interviews equally.
sjcslp Posted February 24, 2020 Author Posted February 24, 2020 They were very laid-back about doing a video interview! They did not offer me one either, but I emailed them and asked if they provide any accommodations for applicants who are too far to attend in-person. I was panicking about it too but as soon as I said it was too far for me to travel, they offered to do it via Zoom. If you ask, I am sure they'd be very understanding! Not everyone has the ability to travel that long with such short notice.
speechie2beplease Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 Hi everyone! Congratulations on receiving interviews from Georgia State! I wanted to ask if any of you received any confirmation messages after selecting a time. I submitted my time around February 19th but have yet to receive any confirmation about it. Also, does anyone know if we are having 1-1 interviews or if we will be placed in groups? I am getting kinda nervous thinking about it ?

I didn't receive a confirmation either and it was making me really nervous! I called Teresa (the lady who sent the interview invite) and she was able to confirm that I was on the schedule. So if you are worried about it you can definitely call to ask! I didn't ask about the 1-1 vs. group interview and have been wishing I did - let us know if you find out! It seems like they are signing up multiple people for each time slot so that kind of points towards a group interview... speechie2beplease 1

I never got a confirmation email but if you selected the interview time on the link they sent it should be fine! They’re pretty responsive to emails too if you wanted to confirm. I’m pretty sure it’s 1 on 1 interviews, and they’re only 15 minutes long. I found an old page on ASHA from Georgia State explaining how they do their interviews. It’s about ten years old but it sounded really similar to how they described it for this round of interviews. Basically there’s a team of interviewers and each interviewee is asked the same general questions, like why GSU/speech pathology and what you like to do outside of school and qualities/goals that would work at GSU, and maybe some follow up questions. There shouldn’t be any knowledge based questions or anything. I don’t know if the current interviews are the same but from my experience, schools don’t like to change the way they do things so I’m assuming it’ll be pretty similar haha speechie2beplease and loufinn137 2
loufinn137 Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Here's a post from 2016 that has some great information from a former student about the interview process and GSU in general!
georgiaspeechie Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 Hi! In case any of you are stalking GSU threads on here, I wanted to chime in! I am a current CSD grad student at Georgia state. Some of the biggest questions that I remember (and that many of my classmates/friends remember) are: What is an SLP and why do you want to be one? (Don't be generic - be unique!) What are your feelings on diversity in the profession? What are you most apprehensive about regarding grad school? (this is sort of a disguised "strengths and weaknesses" question) speechie2beplease 1
