war Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Well, I have one day left to make a decision, and I am still considering both Michigan and Wisconsin. Right now, I am leaning towards Wisconsin, but I was just curious to see what others thought about the two programs. Which one is better? What are their respective strengths?
floffel Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Wisconsin has better theoretical training and has a great placement rate. It is also definitely the right choice if you are interested in biostatistics. Michigan is a great university and Ann Arbor is a fun place to be, but Wisconsin is definitely a better choice academically (Madison is fun too, by the way).

I think that the op is probably not interested in biostat since they mentioned Michigan stat vs. Wisc. stat. At Michigan, biostat and stat are separate dept's. I think that Wisconsin is the better department. But, you have to make your own decision. Did you visit the two dept's? What did you like better about Wisc.? What about Mich.? Which dept. gave you a better feel? After all, you will be spending 4-6 years there! My advice, try to make a list of pros/cons and then sleep on it. When you wake up, remove the conscious mind and let the subconscious mind decide. It is almost always right, in my experience.
statsguy Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Reputation-wise, I'd say they're pretty much the same. Both have some excellent faculty, as well as great job placement. Also, both are in pretty good locations. If it were me, it'd come down to research.
sciencegal Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Without knowing more about your interests and going just on reputation I'd say Wisconsin.
