I applied for PhD programs in French Studies, and so far I have been rejected in my applications ; only NYU hasn't answered yet, but I was not offered any interview so far. However, Columbia University offered to get me into the M.A. program.
The thing is, of course, that this basically requires 100.000$ (including living fees) just for a year. They have written very encouraging and thoughtful emails about the funding opportunities, but they did insist that they were limited.
Coming from the French system, I tend to pay less than 20.000$ (including living fees) a year for my studies, because the tuition fees in Paris cost around 500$ a year, versus 65 000$ in Columbia. Paying a 130 times higher tuition fee is quite... hard to conceive.
I'm considering a PhD for the academic year 2021-2022, preferably in Princeton or Columbia, but I don't know how relevant a M.A. would be to be accepted. I have been rejected already in other applications for the years 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. It even seems that very few of the M.A. holders in one university are actually accepted into the PhD program — at least it seems so in Columbia University in French studies.
So, how can I expect to provide this amount of money? Are on-campus jobs paid enough and accessible? Shouldn't I do something more relevant for my career with such an amount of money, like funding a young research team, interview equipments, support theatrical/literary projects relevant to my area of expertise, attend conferences and developing my academic identity by myself?
My deepest thanks to anyone who took the time to read all of this so far, and my gratitude to everyone caring enough to provide advice.
