icebear Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 (edited) Hi! I got into both the Parsons Fashion Studies program and the dual NYU Costume Studies/MSLIS degree program. However, I could not find a lot of info online in terms of student experience although I have reached out to current students. Parsons offered me 75% tuition waiver so I'd end up paying around 6k/year, whereas NYU I'd have to pay full (53k/year). I know financially it makes way more sense to attend Parsons especially because COL in NYC is so high. However, I am also international (Canadian), and the dual degree MSLIS would potentially provide me with OPT, and if I become a librarian potentially a TN Visa. The Parsons degree would give me less options in terms of visa. I am also worried about job prospects in pursuing this career. I may also be interested in pursuing a PhD afterwards, but I am not entirely sure about that yet. Can anyone give me advice? Thank you! Edited March 17, 2020 by icebear clarifying future goals
jubileze Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Hi! I got into the dual degree program as well and I'm choosing to go in the fall. I think you're right about the dual degree offering more career prospects than just Parsons degree, so I guess in a sense the degree would end up paying for itself. In terms of paying for tuition, did you apply for financial aid? If not, I think there's still time to do that and you may be able to get some money to offset the costs. Also, if you're planning on doing a PhD afterwards, there's usually no charge (in the United States) for that and if you have taken out loans, they are paused for the duration of your time at school. I think with that you might have a lot of leeway in terms of paying off the tuition in the short and long term.
