Hi ,

I need an urgent help in my situation. My top choice school has not offered me anything in terms of financial support. While another offer (not from top choices) has offered my aid which I have already accepted.

My question is that can I accept the offer ( unfunded) from my school of top choice without requesting a "release" or declining from the funded offer from other school?

I want to do this because I am not sure whether I would be able to arrange funds for my top choice ..but in case I am able to I surely would like to go there...

The deadline for accepting this unfunded offer is 20th April.

Please help!

From my experience you need a confirmation that the initial school you accepted an offer to has confirmed your decline BEFORE the other school (top choice) can move forward on confirming your acceptance to them.

I hope that makes sense!

I'm guessing you're still holding out for Stanford. My advice would be to just reject them. If I'm not wrong, all funding decisions have been sent out. If you haven't heard from them regarding funding by 15 April, you aren't going to hear from them again. Since you accepted a financial aid offer from another school, you are contractually bound to attend school there. The only way you can accept another offer is for them to release you from your original acceptance.. I don't think you want to go through all that trouble, so just reject the unfunded offer.

Congrats! Austin is a great school.. I'm sure you'll do fine there.

For future reference, remember that there is a very large consortium of schools who have agreed that they will not allow students to accept at two places. Had you accepted at Stanford, UT could have terminated your offer and notified Stanford of the "double cross," which might have cost you your admission at Stanford. Sounds to me like you went about it the right way, but accepting at two schools where money's involved can ruin your chances that year. Also, remember that others are on the wait list waiting to hear when people decline. In the end, I'm not saying this to scold you (like I said, sounds like you did it right) but just to warn you of possible future complications should you apply to other programs :)
