oregonslp2be Posted August 5, 2020 Posted August 5, 2020 Hi all - I hope my post doesn't get lost among all the other ones like this. I'm applying to schools in the fall and I'm getting hit with major stress about it all - I'm super scared I won't get in anywhere so I'm hoping someone on here can give me advice. I've looked at the stats on ASHA Ed-Find but for some reason those don't stifle my fears. Here is some background for reference. Undergraduate: University of Oregon, double majoring in Communication Disorders & Sciences and Sociology. Overall GPA 3.78, CDS GPA 3.81. Work experience: 2+ years at a private speech therapy clinic working as the administrative assistant, i.e. I schedule appointments, collect payments, deal with insurance companies, prep supplies for the SLPs, and other random tasks. 4+ years at a nursing facility, I just worked as a food server but still got so much experience with that population, and learned I really love them working with them. One summer as a "summer program lead," essentially I supervised 20+ kids, M-F, and planned activities for them as well. GRE: I'm taking it on September 28th and have been studying non-stop (almost obsessively, I need to relax I think ?). But for reference, I got 149 Q / 152 V on my initial diagnostic test. Not great, but that was before I started studying and I will have almost three months of studying under my belt when I actually take the exam. I also took a GRE prep course and had my instructor, who grades official GRE essays, take a look at mine and she said I would have gotten a 4.5 or a 5 with my practice essays. Letters of Rec: I plan on asking my CDS advisor for one, who is also a professor and the head of the department. We have a decent relationship. I will also ask my boss at the speech therapy clinic, who doubles as my professor because she has taught some of my undergrad classes. Finally, I'll ask an SLP who works with me at the clinic to write me one, we've formed a great relationship over the years. I feel confident in the two LORs I will get from my boss and coworker from the clinic, not to toot my own horn but my boss praises me a lot for my work at the clinic and I've built up solid relationships with the SLPs. Schools I'm considering: University of Oregon, Idaho State University, University of Montana, Minnesota State University - Mankato, University of Minnesota - Duluth, and University of Northern Colorado. Sorry for the long post, but I'm feeling the stress of applications big time and would love any reassurance.
