Hey, Guys! I am a senior, who will graduate in Spring 2021. I am interested in applying for Stats and Biostats PhD programs. Just wanted a rough idea of what schools would be appropriate for my background.

Undergrad Institution: Unranked medium sized public school

Major: Mathematics (Minor = Computer Science)

GPA  = 3.79

GRE =   162Q  / 155V   / 3.5W

Type of Student = Domestic White Male (adopted from Russia as a baby, if it makes a difference)

Part of University Honors Program

Math Classes:  Calc I,II,II (All A's), Diff EQ (B), Abstract Algebra I, II (B in I, A in II), Real Analysis I, II (A in I, B in II), Combinatoric and G.T (B), Numerical Methods (C, was a busy semester), Linear Algebra (A)

Stats Courses:  Applied Statistics I, II (A in both), Statistical Methods I (A, will take Stat Methods II next semester), Applied Machine Learning (A)

CS Courses: Java I, II (A in both), Operating Systems (A), Computer Architecture (A or B, don't know yet)

Other relevant courses:  General Physics I, II (A in both)

Research Experience:

 Working with a professor on some projects that include crop yield prediction, and image analysis of crops.  Might have a paper but likely no publication.

Letters of Rec:

1 Really good letter from the Stats prof who I do the research with.

1 letter from my Analysis prof, (will likely be good), and 1 from another stats prof (ok to good).

Schools (I don't know how accurate this is)

         Reach:   (Stat PhD) UT Austin, Rice, T&AMU, ISU, NC State

         Average:  (Stat PhD)UF, SMU

         Safety:  (Stat PhD) U of South Carolina, AZ State

I may have been conservative on schools and could be more ambitious but I don't know.

Thanks so much for the help!

I think you need to either retake the GRE or apply to schools where you don't have to submit your GRE score, as 162 Q is going to hurt you a lot.   I think UT Austin, Rice, TAMU, ISU, NCSU, and UF are unrealistic.  SMU, SC, and AZ State are more reasonable options but I would still not consider them safeties.
