Curious as to why people are applying to ivy league or top tier programs-- does it mostly have to do with the experience while there or the possible opportunities afterward?

Curious as to why people are applying to ivy league or top tier programs-- does it mostly have to do with the experience while there or the possible opportunities afterward?

I think the name is most useful for the private sector. Otherwise the best thing about top tier programs is the classmates -- who you meet along the way that will help you later. Certainly quality of program is an issue too, but I think you can get a solid education at a lot of places (though certainly, top tier will have their pick of faculty).
