hnrybelh Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 Hey everyone, I plan to apply for a Statistics/ Data Science masters (preference for Statistics) with a background in Economics. Would love to hear my chances at each listed institution to better understand if I am being realistic! Undergraduate Institution is University College London (UCL) Major is Economics (Bachelor of Science) GPA is 3.70+ (yet to graduate) Type of Student White Male (UK) GRE has not been taken yet, but I test well and believe I could get 168/166 (Q/V) and a strong result in the writing section Research Experience is none currently, but am working on this Work Experience is again, limited. Nothing much has happened since COVID but I have worked as a Venture Capital Director for our universities largest student society (approx 6,000 members across the university) and looking for a TA role. Have also been approached to help on a project for a FinTech startup which will be rooted in Econometrics and Statistics. Letters of Recommendation strength will depend on research experience, but will get two strong letters from Econometrics and Microeconomics classes My greatest fears are my transcript being weak, despite my overall performance being good. Furthermore, I am unsure whether my background has covered enough content in Statistics to be competitive. Schools MS, Statistics, Stanford MS, Statistics, Oxford MS, Data Science, Harvard MA, Statistics, Berkeley MS, Statistics, Yale + other schools, the above ones are my main focus (especially top two) so suggestions are very welcome! Am I being unrealistic, and what steps can I take between now and my application to be more competitive? Thank you!
Stat Assistant Professor Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 Which math classes have you taken? It seems as though the Economics major is more mathematical/rigorous in other countries than in the U.S., so if you've taken the requisite math classes (at the minimum Calculus I-III and Linear Algebra), then I think your chances should be good for your list of schools. UCL is a very prestigious school and your GPA looks solid.

With regards to classes, I took a Mathematics for Economics course that covered lots of Calculus III, and did lots of the other topics in High School (Further Maths A-level). In my second year, I took a Linear Algebra course that was cancelled due to COVID (will clarify this on Application). Furthermore, I have taken a Statistics course and comprehensive Econometrics courses during my second and third years which has covered Regression techniques in great detail.
