I_am_bereft_of_lordship Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 (edited) Hi all, I'm was thinking about applying for a PhD in Statistics this year for 2022. I'm currently in a masters program but grades for these courses wont be available until after the deadline to apply for most schools. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Research Interests : No hard and fast research interests: Time series data in neuroscience, and biomedical data analysis Undergraduate Institution: Top 40 Major: Math/Neuroscience GPA: Overall : 3.9 Major: 3.85 Type of Student: Domestic Asian Male Relevant Classes:Math Courses Calculus 2,3 (A/A) Matrix Algebra(A) Discrete Mathematics (A) Number theory(A) Differential Equations(A) Differential Equations (A) Numerical Methods(A) Real Analysis (B-) ( This is unfortunate first semester of covid and my computer crashed during our only exam ) Stochastic Processes (A) Stat Courses - Probability (A) - Mathematical Statistics (A) - Applied Regression (A) - Biostatistics(A) - Grad-level courses (in progress): Distribution Theory; Time Dependent Data; Applied linear Stat Methods Other courses - Quantitative Methods in Neuroscience(1/2)(A) I'm planning to take few more grad-level courses on computational statistics, statistical methods, spatial statistics next semester. Test Scores : GRE general : V 162 / Q 168 / A 4.5 Research Experience: Three publications in unrelated fields; two poster presentations. 2.5 years working in electrophysiology data analysis. 2 semester working as a research assistant in a neuroscience lab. Work Experience: - 1 year working as a research assistant in electrophysiology lab Honors: Presidential Scholarship; University honors 8 semesters LOR : One from stat professor, one from a PDE professor, one from my previous PI Other Notes: I was thinking about applying to Duke biostatistics; UCLA; Purdue; Quantitative Sciences UT MD Anderson; and University of Illinois Urbana Champagne; Florida State University. I might have to revise this list given that its probably very optimistic. Edited October 20, 2021 by I_am_bereft_of_lordship
bayessays Posted October 21, 2021 Posted October 21, 2021 What's the master's in, statistics? I'd probably include a sentence explaining the B- in real analysis but you basically have straight A's otherwise and I think people will be understanding. Schools like UCLA, UIUC, Duke Biostat, FSU seem like good targets. Other big state schools like OSU, TAMU, Iowa State. I think you'll also have a really good shot at most Biostat programs outside the top few. I'd apply to a few more schools than other people because your results might be a little more variable with the real analysis grade, but don't sell yourself short - your profile is strong.
I_am_bereft_of_lordship Posted October 21, 2021 Author Posted October 21, 2021 Thank you for the advice! yes the masters is in statistics at uchicago (if the institution matters). I am very interested in biostats I liked the faculty interests at Michigan biostats and Minnesota biostats do you think that those would be too much of a reach for me? Ill also add OSU, TAMU, and Iowa.
