aln Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 (edited) To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. Essay: "Characterstics of a institution lies with the members it constitutes", the prompt suggest that to understand most important characterstics of a society, one must study its major cities. I majorly disagree and believe that this in itself undermines the purpose of characterstics observation for following two reasons. To Begin, any metric to judge characterstics of a society should be inclusive. The very purpose of such examination is to judge society as a whole, often due to unassumed advantages cities might exhibit best of what is to offer. For instance, In a country as diverse as India, where more than 80 percent of the population resides in rural parts of the country, having a metric only significant to less than 20 percent of the population will give wrong impression about the prevelant pros and cons in the society. It could very well be that the cities assesement only signify what privileged class has been offered, while also undermining any future attempt that could use these data points that might be used to improve lives of people actually in need. Further, such partial metrices can be used to marginalize a community in the society. Either intentionally or unintentionally such metrics can be used to construe an argument favourable to people in power. For Instance, along the border of North and South Korea(also known as De-Militarized Zone), North Korea has built a model village in order to deliever a narrative that DPRK(North Korea) is modern society, however this couldn't be farther from the truth. While such pompous show was at display, North Korea in 1990's experienced severe famine, beccause of which millions of its citizens lost their life. Thus, if we were to give credibility to society based upon upon what it represents in selected region, we playing right into the propoganda of the Powerful often at the cost of subjugation of minority. However, as an instigation we can definetly begin with studying cities as they are representative of what we actually intend to present, but this study should further include even the far remote area, thus developing a inclusive metric that could steer society towards a well informed, grounded narrative.
