hejduk Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Not trying to start a teaching vs research war, but I'm more interested developing pedagogic methods, rather than doing research. Are there any programs that stress the teaching part over research? I'm guessing that all programs do require research (read dissertation), but it'd be interesting to see if there are any good, respected programs that are still teaching-oriented.

If you have no desire to work at an R1 University (publish or perish) then it might be worthwhile to look at some of the schools that are not listed by NCA as 'top notch' but will nonetheless help you succeed in what YOU want to do with YOUR PhD. I am in the same boat as you. I love teaching and that is what I want to do. I'd like to get a job at a state school or small liberal arts college and I would be happy as a clam. Schools to look at: U Denver (I am not sure if they have a Mass Comm program though), Howard U, Texas Tech, GSU is kind of a mixture....(I might be wrong as I am no expert. Good luck! Look around on the net and ask some of your profs and former profs.
StudyMom Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 I am a third year PhD in the dissertation and quals and interviewing stage. FYI -- Texas Tech is very research oriented. Also, some of the smaller schools that are not R1 would like to be respected for research and are looking for R1 grads. The job market is harsh and it is best to have a balanced portfolio of teaching and research, better at one area, but perfectly adequate in the other area. Also, make sure to do some volunteer work for 'service' because service is the third part needed. Some schools allow graduate students to teach and others do not, so keep that in mind as you search for your best fit. Best of luck!
