I'm totally stuck on this. I've read so many statements of purpose that are full of accounts of research experience, work experience, and highly specific professional goals

I would strongly suggest you post the text of your SoP, so people can give you specific advice. Otherwise, we're apt around here to provide a whole lot of (useless) idle speculation.
