I hired someone. He did it for free because he had never photographed artwork before and wanted the experience. He had a nice camera $2,000. But don't remember what kind it was? (as I'm not a photographer and that's why i hired someone!). But the photos are super high res and amazing. It took him a little while to do it - moving around the lighting and everything - because my work is so large and the nature of the materials. - but he figured it out.

I found him on craigslist. I'd suggest posting on craigslist for a photographer and see who responds, look at portfolios, etc...or maybe get lucky with someone to do it free (or cheap) with a great camera and little experience.

Good luck!

I was wondering how many of you hired someone to photograph your portfolio and how many of you did it yourselves. Also if you photographed it yourself what type of camera did you use?

I decided that if I'm planning on making art for the next 50 years, I might as well learn how to document it myself. I bought a Canon DSLR (the relatively inexpensive Rebel XSi) and got myself a zoom lens with a decent range (17-85mm). It's definitely not easy for me (I've never been trained as a photographer), but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I just wish my studio was large enough to keep my lighting kit set up all the time.

If you're inexperienced and planning on applying for schools this year, I'd recommend hiring a photographer. I've been doing it for a couple of years now, and I'm still not totally satisfied with my shots.
