I'd like to get a PhD in Math and I was wondering if you could give me some tips. Here is my situation:

- 39 years old
- studied Computer Science with a Math minor as undergrad
- graduated in '04 with a low GPA (major GPA 3.2), with cumulative lower.
- I've been in the industry since then working as a software engineer
- I worked on self-driving cars 3 years ago and at Twitter 10 years ago
- I don't have any references in academia who can write me recommendation letters
- took Calculus I to IV, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics
- I can financially support myself without working and study full time
- I am open to doing a MS degree first

I'd truly like to do research in Math and explore a topic and dive deep. I don't have a good idea what areas interest me as I don't have much understanding of the different subfields.
