Hopefully you can offer some advice and thoughts of my chances of admissions to Sociology PhD programs, with a specific concentration in Medical Sociology. Thank you! Program Applying To & Interests: Sociology – Medical, Health Care Organizations, Aging, Culture of Health Care Schools Thinking of Applying To: Emory Duke University of Colorado Wisconsin UC San Diego UC San Francisco Washington Texas Utah Vanderbilt Undergraduate institution: Top 20 Public University Undergraduate GPA: 3.2 Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): 3.85 Undergraduate Major: Psychology/Communications Graduate institution: Top 5 School of Public Health GPA: 3.4 – worked full time while earning degree Degree: Masters of Public Health – Health Policy GRE Quantitative Score: 740 GRE Verbal Score: 720 GRE AW Score: 6.0 *Scores older than 5 years; need to retake Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 8 Years of Work Experience: 8 Describe Relevant Work Experience: Entire work experience has been with two Universities either in Schools of Medicine or Public Health in both management and research positions. I have managed pediatric clinics, large graduate medical education training programs and large research projects in areas of aging, nursing home care, and vaccination disparities. I have over 2 years of qualitative research experience (conducting and analyzing) and have presented at 5 national conferences and have 3 publications in prestigious journals Strength of LOR's: Will have strong LORs from prominent professors and researchers with whom I have taken classes and worked with.
soc_gradGuy Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I would say you have a very decent chance of getting accepted in those programs especially with the MPH and work experience, though with many budget cuts there is a fair amount of luck to get into many programs these days....our incoming cohort in our school used to be 12-15 each year, and now has dropped to 5-7....places like Wisc. may still be accepting large cohorts but not everybody is funded in those programs in the first couple of years....my suggestions would be to apply to as many of those programs listed as possible,: why not pursue a PhD in the school where you did the MPH (is there a joint PH/sociology program there?)
