Yep, how terrible is that. I believe the federal government won't tax your first $8,500 and then only tax you 10% on the rest of your stipend. That's assuming you are single and have no deductions you can make. I know where I am moving, there is no income tax, but even in states that do impose an income tax, they tend to be low. Lets say you're in New York State where they charge a 5.25% income tax on your total income and you have a stipend of $20,000 and no deductions, you will actually make $17,700 (I think, I just did this off the top of my head). I think if you're in New York City, you make less because they impose a city tax as well. People shoud definently calculate how much they would pay in taxes before deciding to accept an offer. Not all $20,000 offers are equal considering taxes and cost of living.
