Stochastic_jester Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 Hey everybody I'm starting to apply to PhD and master's programs and I just wanted some honest evaluations of my profile. From what my professors/mentors have told me I have a decent shot but I'm curious about what this forum thinks. Student Type: Canadian Male Undergrad: Top university for statistics in Canada (UofT, UBC, McMaster, Mcgill, etc) Major: mathematics and statistics joint major GPA: 3.774 Undergrad Math and stats courses (chronological) Calc (I-IV) A+,A+, B+,A- Linear Algebra I-A, Proofs in Linear Algebra-A, Statistical methods-A+, Intro to mathematical reasoning (basic intro to proofs)-A Intro to probability-A, Abstract Algebra-C+ (had a personal reason for a bad semester mentioned in my SOP, did learn and grow from this) Mathematical statistics-A Regression Analysis-A, Complex Analysis-A-, Introduction to Analysis (first course in real analysis)-A, Multivariate Analysis-A+, Survey Sampling-A+, introduction to differential equations-A+ Taking 4th year: Stochastic processes, Data Structures and algorithms, graduate biostats class, mathematical finance, Real Analysis I, Time series, Data science theory, Neural networks and machine learning Research: Senior Thesis with well-known/famous professor advising me- Stochastic modeling Letters of Recommendation: One from my advisor, also instructed me for survey sampling and graduate course, another from an assistant professor who taught me probability and analysis, and another from my advanced calc IV instructor who knows me on a more personal level. I have great relationships with all of these people and they inspired me to even pursue a PhD in the first place. Most of the schools I applied to come from their recommendations so I have no doubt these letters will be positive. The only thing I'm concerned about is the third recommender was a post-doc and not a tenure or tenure track professor. Pretty much applying to most masters programs in Canada (UofT, UBC, Waterloo, etc) Also applying to some top 15 american PhD programs (University of Michigan, CMU, UNC Chapel Hill, etc) Just wanted to see where I stand. Thank you
