neo123 Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Hi all, I am applying for further studies this year. I am applying for MS. I don't have a good score in GRE. I am doubtful about university list selection. where should i apply. GRE Verbal: 380 GRE Quant: 790 CPA: 6.6/10 Projects: 1. auto locking buzzer system using Mosfet that locks the first buzzer pressed. 2. university quiz site. I created the whole university quize site which was not there before i created. I created a great deal of difference in the quiz were handled after this point. Its being used now and is used in Technical festivals where colleges from all india participates. 3. IR guided vehicle. A vehicle using 16F877A programmable microcontroller. I got 3rd prize in this in my college technical fest where all the best colleges take part from india. 4. Image retrieval system. Image retrieval system that retrieves image from the database given a matching image. 5. Enterprise service subscription system at IBM. 6. Unix based softphone. Implementing few protocols like SIP and SDP. 7. Integration of two SOA based products at IBM (SAP and WebSphere Commerce) at IBM. 8. Click free Portal update tool for Web Portal Server based on Atom feeds at IBM 9. Rational application Developer Cloud Support developer at IBM. i was among 5 guys selected for job at IBM software labs out of 200. I was among 10 guys selected for internship at IBM out of 150. For admission at IIT Roorkee i was among top 0.4 percent out of 2,25,000 from all over my country. I have good reco. 2 from my profs one from IBM product toolkit Architect. Where should i apply? What points should i highlight in my SOP? I am doubtful considering my low CPA and low GRE. i can consider giving GRE again if it helps much.
neo123 Posted September 20, 2010 Author Posted September 20, 2010 forgot one point to add one point 10. I have done some entrepreneur stuff also. I have created one product. Optical character recognition software. Where it find the text from the images and creates pdf/word file.
newms Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Your quant GRE score is ok for a CS applicant. Your verbal GRE score is on the low side, but that is not so important for CS. If you want you can retake. As for which schools you should consider, you really need to look at what area of CS are you interested in, since schools have different strengths. What areas are you interested in?

As i have not done any work in computer Architecture area. I don' know how this will be taken by the panel members. What do you think? do i stand a chance?

You're going to have a harder time getting into a Computer Architecture program with no work in that area, but it is still possible. You're going to have to convince the adcomm that you have the ability and experience to succeed in that area though. Architecture and systems aren't my areas so I'm not sure of any schools that would be a good fit for you.

I think you could look at a few top 20 schools, as well as a few top 30-40 schools. It's always best to apply to a range of schools since getting into top schools is hard. Have you decided whether you want to focus on Architecture or Systems? Also, do you have any research experience? If you go with Architecture, I think you could focus on your work with the IR guided vehicle and possibly the buzzer system - anything that could show your prowess in electronics (since you say you have no work in computer architecture). The other projects you worked on are interesting too, but I'm thinking the skills you used on those projects *may* be transferable if you want to get into computer architecture. Is it a research based degree that you are interested in or a professional MS? I ask because if its a research based degree, you should consider applying for the PhD since there is more funding available for PhD students, but be aware that profs will expect you to have well defined research interests if you are applying for the PhD. As I said before, I don't know too much about which schools are strong in Architecture and systems/compilers so I'm not sure which schools are good in those areas.
