Mahaveer Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Hi all, I am really confuse about my profile evaluation and chance of getting in to top 10 universities. Any thoughts would be most appreciated B.Tech (2005-2009) IIT Delhi (Top Engineering collage in India) Major Degree:- Engineering Physics Minor Degree:- Computer Science GPA:- 7.9/10 GRE score:- 550+ V, 800 Q Research: 1.5 Year Exp. in R&D as a Algorithm developer in a very good company. Publication & Patents:- 5 patents (3 US , 2 India) and 2 conference paper (IEEE) Award: - 2 best project award in IIT. My dilemma is 1. My GPA is just above average, but I have enough patents and publication to show my skills. 2. My Major is in Engineering Physics and I am planning to apply in Electrical or computer science department. My patents are on Algorithm techniques, minor degree is in computer science, work experience of 1.5 year in software industry will strong backup for me. And also all professors for recommendation are from Electrical Engineering (well reputed and will give me very strong recommendation). So should I apply in top 5 university in US (Stanford, MIT, CalTech and Berkeley) or choose low ranking collages(Texas, Purdue, Cornell). What will be chance of getting top 5 if I am planning to apply for PhD rather than MS. And which department I should choose. Please give me some suggestions Thank you -Mj
OH YEAH Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) Why do you think Cornell and UT Austin are low ranking schools? They usually rank higher than Caltech, for what it's worth. It's hard to assess chances without any information on letters of recommendation and research experience. Your GPA, patents, and work experience are not as important, and your posts on this forum (as well as your statement of purpose) should make it clear that you understand this. Now: 1) WHERE exactly did you publish? 2) Did you have a significant role in the publication? 3) More importantly, do your recommenders think you had a significant role in the publication? 4) Have you worked on other projects (perhaps independently) that had good results, even if they are not ready for publication? 5) Do your recommenders think you have other projects that had good results? Mahaveer Posted October 7, 2010 Author Posted October 7, 2010 Hi, here is my reply, My research area is algorithm development in GPS/MEMS sensor navigation field(Geomatics), probably I am going to apply in same field if it is available in ECE (electrical and computer). My experience in this field is 1.5 years (working in R&D as a Algorithm developer in a very good company) 1.) My all publication are published in US in (IEEE & Institution of Navigation (ION))conference, patents are filed in US as well as India. 2.) I am 2nd author in all this publication, currently I am working in company so all work is done by me but ofcourse my manager is main author. 3.) Yes, because I am only one who done this work so they know my role in publication. 4.) My B.Tech thesis and my current work in this company are same, but in B.Tech I have done some very good project under same recommenders. 5.) All my recommenders are well impressed with my work and I am still in contact so they will give me very good recommendation. Thanks you, -Mj
